People wonder about how a Softbank purchase of DreamWorks might help Sprint. I can only speculate, Son clearly has a master plan in the works, but it doesn't take much imagination at all to come up with some ideas perhaps wild, perhaps not, what did Son say, expect the unexpected. How about a DreamWorks production about a cute friendly robot named Pepper who comes alive and saves the day. Oh, gee, wait, there is a such a robot coming to Sprint next summer, guess that takes care of the merchandising for the movie....LOL

    Here's something interesting from August:

DreamWorks Animation Names Fazal Merchant CFO

Merchant previously served as senior vp and chief financial officer DirecTV Latin America

Jeffrey Katzenberg's DreamWorks Animation has tapped former DirecTV executive Fazal Merchant to serve as its new CFO following Lew Coleman's transition to the role of vice chairman at the animation studio.

Merchant joins DWA Sept. 15. At DirecTV, he was a senior vp and chief financial officer DirecTV Latin America.

A few snippets below. The big picture is that Son is building an international Juggernaut, he has a stated goal acquiring 5000 companies by 2040, do the math. To do that you have to acquire companies which themselves are acquisitive, look at the first paragraph below on DreamWorks's plans.

Softbank is becoming a household name here in the US. Most longs on this message board have suspected some move by Softbank into Content - based on Softbank's previous attempt to buy Universal Music, industry trends/speculation toward blurring lines in communications/vertical mergers, Son's comments on "internet company" not "telecom'.

Son is gathering up tremendous connections in all areas of the world and across many disparate business interests, interesting what doors may open with having more and more connections - all part of establishing a massive power, an international juggernaut, Son's stated goal to be number one.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Katzenberg considered selling the company two years ago but withdrew those plans to focus on
building the business into a broad-based studio with interests in television, theme parks, live
entertainment and digital media. Last year, it bought YouTube teen network AwesomenessTV
    for $33 million in cash.

In July, SoftBank hired former Google executive Nikesh Arora to run a newly created unit called SoftBank Internet and Media, reporting directly to Son, in a move that stoked speculation the telecommunications company could be considering a move to acquire content production assets.

SoftBank held the equivalent of more than $17 billion in cash and equivalents as of the end of June, its most recent reported quarter.

The move by SoftBank comes as Alibaba is also looking to expand its video content offered through a set-top box in China. In July, the company announced a partnership with Lions Gate Entertainment for its titles including "The Hunger Games"

Haven't dug into the details, but sounds like it's only applicable to the higher level data plans, meaning NONE of this even comes close to what Sprint is offering

Sounds like another gimmick from AT&T designed to gouge customers for more money while they say double data as a marketing hype:

    From cnet:

"If a customer signs up for a monthly installment plan, called AT&T Next, or brings their own device, the charge is $15 a line. But if they sign up for a contract, the charge is $40 a month. Under AT&T Next, a family of four would have to pay a total of $190 a month for the lowest tier plan, while the price for four with two-year contracts would cost $290 a month. The contract price is higher because the carriers subsidize the smartphone cost, allow customers to pay $200 for what should be a $650 device.

By doubling the data at the 15GB tier and above, AT&T is hoping to drive customers toward the pricier plans. That boosts revenue without affecting its profitability. Unchanged is AT&T's four-person, 10GB plan for $160 a month (that price assumes you've joined AT&T Next, brought your own device, or paid full price for the phone)."

"AT&T doubles data plan sizes in huge limited-time promo"

This of course means one thing: New Sprint plans have been HIGHLY effective, this says that Sprint has been taking such significant share from AT&T that AT&T absolutely HAD to act....note this is a MEASURED move, designed to stop the bleeding, it still doesn't match Sprint on price and doesn't match Sprint on UNLIMITED Data.....

    Very interesting development....

Jugs/whadda/poorlarry/et al, a history of deceit and misinformation:

    1) Jugs admitted to "posting to mislead"
    2) Attempted to get posters to pay for his advisory services on pay pal
    3) claimed to be a B of A employee, with a tall tale about the "Netherlands"
    4) Constantly clones Greekmoster101 ID, admitted to creating many clones, some still in use
    5) constantly copies assumed greekmonster101 conventions such as just ask ID and own thread creation
    6) constantly engages in straw man attacks
    7) admitted to over 100 ID's
    8) In Jugs first comments about cute interactive robot Pepper, talks about sodomizing it
    9) called for Sprint BK when Sprint at $2.50, said it would never ever see $5.00
    10) said Sprint would never ever get the iPhone
    11) spread constant misinformation about Sprint Spectrum, that is had no value or decreased in value

Greekmonster101: Tradition of excellence and innovation in message board posting. Widely acknowledged or assumed (and unconfirmed by Greek) posts and innovations:

1)"Spectrum Thesis" - most widely discussed, lauded and bashed post of all time
2)Widely assumed creator of the Superhero ID's who only EVER posted factual articles, never opinion
3)Greekmonster101's close questioning gained an admission from Jugs that Jugs "posted to mislead"
4)Widely assumed creator of past_postmaster, feared by bashers for exposing disingenuous basher posts using their very own words
    5) Discredited long term basher and odd-ball precursor to jugs "mrc0156"
    6) Widely assumed creator of the "just ask" ID's, now being copied
    7) Created own popular thread, a convention now being copied by bashers.
    8) Was correct in call that when Sprint was at $2.50, it was going to $10 (most important)
    9) Greekmonster101 is the most cloned ID of all time by bashers

Could you start an ID called "I am the straw man", because practically all you ever do is start straw man attacks. For the uninitiated in straw man attacks, here's a good example:

I respond to a post which was over-complicating getting a general feel for Sprint sales, and mention also that we need the hard data after the quarter, I note that as well in my comment.

A straw man attack is initiated by a known evil-basher who implies I said buy Sprint based on lines in a few stores. You see I never said THAT. It's out of context. If you read basher posts here on a regular basis you will see posts JAM-PACKED with straw man attacks, some subtle, some not so subtle.

You can actually use these to see that certain posters are clearly disingenuous.

Let me simplify something. One doesn't need surveys, Ouija boards, or magic healing crystals to figure out a general view of Sprint sales. All on has to do is drive by a half dozen Sprint stores AND drive by a few AT&T, VZ and TMUS stores to know that sales are significantly better. As the numbers come out for this quarter we'll have the hard info (though the iPhone was only out for half the quarter).

Look at it this way, we all (mostly) like and certainly depend on computers. But we most always have to "do something" to interact with them. One way or another the bigger trend is toward interacting without so much "doing" on our part. This applies in many ways....say to the gas station, that gas pump you interact with is essentially a Robot, it very limited in function, and you have to insert your card, and press a lot of buttons.

What if the gas station Robot recognized you as you pulled up, greeted you by first name and asked you if you want the usual "regular, fill up billed to your card".....you say "yes" (or select to change options).....and off you go....and how cool would it be if supermarket scanners could just scan all your items instead of the clerk swooshing each item over that scanners and fiddling with the ones that don't read.

Small improvements perhaps, but on the other hand if I had a choice between two supermarkets, or two gas stations, all things equal, one had the better Robotics, that's where I'm going.....

So I see that as the big trend, more computing with less doing required of us humans...and a Robot such as Pepper, priced right (under $2000 sounds great)...perhaps fits right in to that big trend......let's see the adoption in Japan......then it may be time to get really excited about it here.......personally I'd like to have one.....

PEPPER (which would appear to be Son's so-called "secret weapon") has 12 hour battery life. A news report the other day about the small Intel robot "Jimmy" had their robot with a battery life of about 45 minutes, that's a problem. Certainly we will see how Pepper does in Japan when released early next year, then due out in the US next summer. He will be available exclusively at Sprint stores.

The big deal is its broad application (consumer, business, education), this is why Son would need a whole development team in silicon valley - its application is as broad as the world itself. The more I've looked at trends, the more I see the wearable's trend as a dud. Google Glass has too many issues with privacy - no one wants to feel their conversation is going straight to the internet. And a WATCH....I was underwhelmed by Apple's release. I think we as a society amidst such growing surfeit in technology, really need something next-level to capture imagination and interest - mobile, autonomous, interactive computing, that's next level, that's Robotics.

    From the Aldebaran site:
    ______________________________________________________________________________

    Who is Pepper?

The latest creation from Aldebaran, Pepper is the first humanoid robot designed to live with humans. At the risk of disappointing you, he doesn't clean, doesn't cook and doesn't have super powers... Pepper is a social robot able to converse with you, recognize and react to your emotions, move and live autonomously.

Engaging and friendly, Pepper is much more than a robot, he’s a companion able to communicate with you through the most intuitive interface we know: voice, touch and emotions.

Created for SoftBank Mobile—one of the largest mobile phone operators in Japan- Pepper is already greeting and interacting with customers in stores.

Always a Classic, more true now than ever, The Original SPECTRUM THESIS:

Sometimes there is such a forceful overriding dynamic at work that nothing else much matters. In Sprint there appears to be such a situation.

This is such a simple concept, it almost hurts, it's TOO simple, we all tend to want a nice complex explanation as to why we should own a stock!

Sprint/CLWR has the largest Spectrum holding of any company in the U.S...... and the FCC has already identified that we're going to run out of Spectrum as more and more wireless devices go online, in other words the Gov't is basically saying that Sprint's Spectrum will go to full capacity utilization....

.....essentially the Gov't just told us that Sprint's network is going to fill to the brim.....simply put, no matter what devices, whether it's smart phones or other consumer devices, smart grid or myriad M2M devices.....sprint's network is going to fill up...... with paying customers!

rg, you have the worst habit where you apparently read every single news item and extrapolate it out to some worst case scenario......you're just a loose cannon like that.......look, a number of execs at various companies have commented on how it is a small telecom/communications world, that "everyone talks to everyone all the time"....and the media has it as their JOB to write SOMETHING...even when there is nothing to report they MUST write...

I suggest you re-evaluate your perspective on media and the relative importance of individual media reports....or risk sounding more loopy than your already do

well stated whigg, point is Son is building an international juggernaut, Son's connections and the fact of his business interests...have value for Sprint.....more directly speaking, Brightstar is a very easy to see example of this, Aldebaran is another.....

one has to also recognize knowledge is power, Son has huge advantages of knowledge with his connections, he sits on the BOD of Ali Baba, that gives him certain insights and a world view that HAS great value for Sprint...

...lastly you can add the very deep Softbank pockets.....

as I said, over and over again you take some simple fact (let's say from some blog you read), extrapolate it out to some worst case scenario view, your comments are neither balanced or logical, and frankly it's clear you are unable to see the illogic in your own comments...seriously, take a look at this, how many times have we had a discussion about some issue, I lay out all the facts for you, you see the logic and facts as compelling, showing the blog nonsense you read to be slanted and wrong, you agree with the logic and soundness of the point I make....then...

....15 minutes later you are found parroting the same nonsense from the blog....huh? seriously, after you do that 20 times, what am I to think of you if not nuts....beyond all repair being a euphemism ...
