This low budget operation picks up the leftovers from the larger ops and moves cargo cheaper for any shipper needing niche support. They operate with non-union crews, many from the Philippines and they do not dwell too heavily on maintenance so long as the vessel can make way. There are many FREEs in this world some of which have been around a long time. The vessels venture into areas avoided by the big boys such as doubtful cargoes to trouble spots legally and perhaps sometimes not quite so. The ships all make money or die quietly in some third world harbor. FREE is a big operator among the small guys. When demand rises, most of the large cargo lines max out and this is when the little guys make big bucks. Keep an eye on the BDI and check out the percentage of capacity that the four FREE vessels are achieving.
