HA! Thanks for the laugh. I'm seeing "runs" that ordinarily would take 6 months to occur happen in less than 15 minutes....and I don't know what's worse...the fact that I'm watching this happen with me own two eyes...or the fact that I'm not surprised by any of it.....this is all just part of the logical evolution of machine trading.....there have many, almost countless, mini "flash crashes" over the last 10 years. Most happen so fast and on such timescales that they're barely noticed, much less garner the interests of the media types.....but all of them made today inevitable.....it was only a matter of time before the machines would go "macro" with their "routine" impact on bids and "price discovery." And now they're stomping around all over the carefully manicured "gardens" grown by humans on human timescales. Set's me to wondering euphemistically. Wonder if the humans will do anything about it, eh? We've just been gobsmacked by our own machines. Wonder if we truly understand this??

    So it goes. Bid $15.44

  • Well....yes I'm crazy....but just went back in at `$15.19 on this p/b off the bounce high of ~$15.95. The world ain't comin' to an end. The finny's, overall, ain't as bad as today might lead you to believe. This ain't 2008 redux...and not even 1987, either. This is not to say there aren't issues. There are. But today has been all about machines playing off their programmed logic, and against each other, to drive things in accordance to what the Bots read and the triggers (and the run of them) allows.....where are the humans in this? We're collateral damage. But......to know this is to have an advantage....and however slight it might be an advantage is exactly that.

And in the time it took me to write this the bid broke back north of my intraday downtrend line and is at $15.45....machines...they do have one advantage impossible for we mere humans to surmount....they are fast. VERY fast...

Equity: Intraday TA....draw line off the bounce high of ~$16.59. Use as it's second touch the ~$15.85 of 13:50pm. Draw it thru close. The bid has been staying south of it. I'm using that line into tomorrow (at the least) to identify shorter term set-ups. It line ends the day just north of $15.25. Bid is chaotic at ~$15.22 right now.....let's see how it closes....this area is getting close to a double bottom test of the 52 week low....and a triple bottom test of the ~9 months...

But as I think I've made clear I've little confidence in TA on days like today....so take the above with a tremendouos grain of salt and simply my 2pennies worth of WAG'ing....bid $15.22

Of course it's oversold. Dam near everything is oversold today. But it is what it is....all emotional reactivity and little to no logic. Don't stand in the way of it...just wait and place pieces strategically on your "chess board." This will pass...and like fss13 said...the finnies are actually in pretty good shape...not like 2008. Just don't expect any snapper type rally...today is, as one chattering head stated, a hard hit to the gut....it'll take time to get over it...

Bid $15.93. Still down but trying to come back. So, too, the Dow and markets overall. I'll consider it a plus if the bid can end the day north of flat. Overall you can thank the machines for this Black Swan. Machines have been.....accentuating the ebbs and flows in general market "tidal" dynamics for some time....this one was a weeee bit more "inspired" than times past. For those who were positioned for it you've (probably) made a killing. For those who observed but through dint of positioning were unable to participate today has been a lesson of some significance. I'd dare to say it has been a lesson for everyone....and one unfortunate lesson is probably that you just cannot trust the machines....excepting in being able to play off of them once they commence to move....

    Just some somwhat philosophical thoughts....

Bid $15.86. Let's see how it closes...

Yah....right there with you on GILD. I could not believe it went it dropped south at $90. And I was busy closing out, at least for now, a range of shorts I'd had open and flipping to the light side of some of 'em. I was just praying my machinery didn't lock up on me from all the things I was doing....today has been sumthin' else.....

Sorry...meant resistance/support lines (at that time).Everything was broken; anvils crashing thru crystal sorts of stuff. TA goes right out the window at those times and you fly by the seat of yer pants....ummm....so to speak. Anyway...with Europe approaching close it looks like the bid is trying to stabilize a bit north of $15.50. Times like this make me wonder how much of it is caused by HFT's playing with EFT's and the like? You can take the entire finny sector participants and pretty much overlay their charts on top of each other....and then overlay all of 'em on top of the XLF (for instance). Things that make you go hmmmmm.......?

Folks panic...they forget that Wall Street is not Main Street. As much as WS likes to think they're "all that" to the economy the reality is....not so much. Main Street, while having it's problems, ain't as bad as this WS reaction would have you believe. Once WS calms down they'll realize this....and when they do things will gravitate back towards the center from the extremes currently being expressed. WS fortunes will be lost and made today. Meanwhile Main Streets probably out there thinking..."What's the panic?" ;-)

Black Swan events like today are rare, and unpredictable. You can only arrange yourself to take advantage the advantage presents itself. GILD hitting south of $90 this morning was definitely one of those moments of advantage saying "come grab me!" Errr...at least...from my point of view. Bid now $102.73. G/L!

Black swan events like today throw all bets out the window. Unless you're the type to be running around gathering up the (more) valuable babies that've been thrown out the bath window. I've lived thru 2008. I've lived thru Black Monday circa 1987. These events are rare. But they occur. The key is in being prepared to take advantage when advantage presents itself. ;-) G/L from here!

Bid back at the PM line of $15.52.....quite a roller coaster ride so far and we're only about 30 minutes into the session. Volume is probably gonna be a record-breaker, too....+30minutes into the session and volume already north of 45M shares..bid $15.54....

I do agree with your up-tick comment. As well as with the "wink wink nod nod" of naked shorting. But I can't do anything about it....except to play with one eye always on that aspect. As for the 7% rule...well...we see how well China has done in managing their situation....and despite our illusion of control I think all our circuit breakers and such will be just about as effective....it's herding cats time out there right now...and the cats are in a panic.....

Equitie: But what, exactly, can be done, eh? Free market dynamics at play right now....certainly accentuated by the fact that it's dominated by machines. And machines always, ALWAYS, overshoot positions. It's the way this game is played these days, and I don't see anything changing this so long as computers, machines and software play the role they play today.....so short of going back under a tree and shouting out buy/sell orders at each other it is what it is. Love the media hysteria though....boy were they shrieking when the dow hit being off over a thousand points....

Don't even try. The machines are running this one....and it looks like they're running it into the ground. Days like today you forget the TA or any other such logic. All you can do is watch the machines do what they and prepare yerself for the days to come. Today is a black swan event....and here's the oddity...nobody knows the why of it being upon the markets so suddenly....my WAG is China kicked the first domino...and now the rest are falling...session opening with bid at $14.95....at or close to a new 52week low...just like that...

Extreme? Yes. Snap back? I dunno....I look for a bounce but the timing of it? And I think thoughts and fancies of $20 or better, in this year, are delusional at this point. But....Who knows? You're right that from a trading perspective these are the days you wait for.....I had been taking partial profits on a number of short side positions...building up a cash position for something like this. I'm now looking to close those shorts and play a bounce....but again...timing is everything and my ability to time bottoms/top's is lousy...which is why I stagger in/out positions when playing...let's see how it all works out....bid $15.09
