I have Time Deposits in both countries. In NZ I get 5.15% on a 5 year TD and Australia I seem to be only able to buy TDs of one year or less but I can still get 3.5% on 4-6 month terms. All this is down from the peak 5 years ago of 6.25%+ interest rates. I'm curious, on my $AU Time Deposits I pay the 10% non-resident withholding tax on my $NZ TDs I have no withholding at all. Are you NZT dividends subject to withholding tax.
I've done pretty well with Australian Bank bonds and stocks, telecom will be a new area for me.
I'm sure hoping you're wrong about the Hillary Clinton. Four years of no accomplishments, disaster after disaster in terms of failed policy and the usual Clintonesque corruption. But to be honest and I don't know maybe Romney would have been good....but I don't see any leaders or politicians that are capable of turning around this hollowed out train wreck that America has become.

Interesting idea, makes sense, in America's interest....obviously you'll never be in government nor will it ever be policy.

I took a small position in VCLT today and own two other Vanguard ETFs. I was drawn to them for a number of reasons one of which was my erroneous belief that they were not subject to the same level of manipulation as other stocks. If you've read Dark Pools, and watch VCLT, VGK, BLV among others you can pretty clearly see the pattern. I suspect what you saw a few weeks ago was part of that same game.

I'm thinking about starting a position in Telecom in the Pacific. I'm undecided between SingTel, Telstra or New Zealand Tel. My focus is dividends and some capital accumulation. Do you think Telstra is the best of the three?

  • I had hoped that Vanguard Funds including their ETFs were not the targets of the usual thieves responsible for manipulating stock prices. Watching VGK over the last few days as it jumps up and down from $59.20 to $59.75 day after day.....I can't even imagine whats really going on behind the scenes.

So what do you think....jump in at $39.50 or $40 and watch it go to $50 this year. Nadella sure has a lot more to work with then when Steve Jobs returned to Apple....of course he has more dead wood to deal with also.

I saw a Q&A with the Unilver CEO and really liked where he was coming from. He seemed world class in every way. But I still find myself hesitant to make an investment. I keep mulling over the alternatives like MSFT who also has a good CEO finally and a similar dividend or just buy a Vanguard indexed fund for Europe like VGK. Where do you see this stock one year from now? 50+ or 50-.

I was about to jump in yesterday at $59.49 and literally before I could click my mouse it went to $59.50 and all the way up to $59.75 before trailing off at the end of the day. I'm reading the book Dark Pools and imagined this Algo Computer bidding war or stock manipulation and just sat the thing out. Any insights on what was going on yesterday?

Eric....all interesting points but do you completely discount the value of having a really world class CEO finally? I think of Mulally at Ford. Personally I'd still not buy a Ford but his impact is undeniable. And likewise, I'd still not buy a PC or Microsoft product (at least for now) but that's still not to say MSFT couldn't be at 50 by the end of the year if they move aggressively in those areas that are not Consumer focused and where they are not in direct competition with Apple, Google and Amazon they could have some big success stories to tell . Any thoughts?
