i'll grant you , that anything outside of your door is vastly different from
when you were growing up .. the past 20 years have seen a great
slide .. morally and ethically .. seems like there is a Great Oppression out
1 building nano ... not even sure about that .. we'll have to see the details ... IF GF were to buy the real
estate , they will also face the headache of a huge toxic dump ... IBM's chip making at EF was contained
to a single building ... 323 ... GF will be buying the business ... equipment , applicable patents and they
hope some engineers ... g
Between EF and Potown , IBM does have a lot of real estate ... i can't believe that there is very
much at all going at Potown ... they basically did final assembly and test on the big boxes ...
If anything , NYS will waive all taxes just to keep IBM from exiting the valley all together ...
we'll wait and see ..
Hopefully GF will run operations at EF and not just take the patents and engineers elsewhere .. i doubt
that there is much equipment that use today ...
It just doesn't smell too good , though , for a company to pay another company to take what should have
been a sale ... as has been the case many times in the past , some of IBM's timing has been abysmal ..
go GE ... finally doing what they should have done years ago .. the ghost of JW has
been plaguing them ...
In a 10-year partnership, Globalfoundries will supply IBM with Power processors in exchange for access to IBM’s intellectual property, the people said. That would allow Globalfoundries to access key chipmaking technology and guarantee supply of chips that IBM needs for its systems, like mainframe computers and its Watson data-analytics technology.
.... this is interesting ... so maybe GF will keep the foundry at EF running for a while .
i doubt that they get much of Watson .. the key with Watson isn't so much from
fancy chips , as "massive pararllel processing" .. GF gets chips , not architecture or
software ... if this winds up being an actual partnership , it might not be quite so bad
for IBM ... but it's still suffering ... g
real hardball questions at the next CC ... like what is Emagin's fate with mfg location ... are we safe ?? at least
for the 5 year lease ? there are a host of gas / liquids delivery services at EF .. Emagin rent there is
probably a huge bargain ... if GF doesn't choose to run the fab in B 323 ... then those are at risk ... g
the CEO that set up this mess is long gone .. today's news is the result of what Palmissano did not do ..
I keep hearing how IBM is actually late to the cloud , yet IBM was touting the cloud before anyone
heard of it ... my guess is that Sammy P . didn't put many resources to the cloud , probably expecting a
slam dunk when the time came ..
IBM was making noises about the Cloud over 10 yrs ago ... looks like a miss ,eh ?
IBM continues to have the problem of too many pompous old toads at key decision making levels ...
I expect that IBM will complete it's transition , that it waited too long to put the gas to , but it's going
to be a few years before any real traction takes place ..
THE kicker ... IBM could leverage it's patent trove, and actually partner with smaller firms who
can actually do things in the marketplace .. g
and you don't think that the current div level is at risk ???? IBM's borrowing is pretty well tapped out , so they
won't be able to borrow more to prop up the div and earnings don't look good enough to sustain it ..
anyone not willing to watch at least 2 more quarters before deciding to buy is drinking too much Kool Aid .. g
any serious investor should be watching and in absolutely no hurry to start or add to
a position ..
entire energy sector has lots of dust that needs to settle , same for tech sector ...
far too much controversy on oil / gas ... are the Saudis going to flood the world and
drive prices down , such that US fracking has to mothball ? or is the US driving prices
down for whatever reasons ? Will Russia dump huge volumes on the market because
they need money ... Mexican gangs tapping pipes and selling cheap on black market ?
How many other countries have such gangs ..
The picture is fuzzy ... good time to just watch , maybe buy some insurance .. g
77 - 09 for me ... I used to prep my mgr for a 7 am meeting that was prep for a 9 am meeting which
was the prep for the 11 am meeting , the afternoon was filled with more meetings to discuss what
happened in the morning meetings ...
I was getting the impression that meetings were very important because they had so many ... g
also , it was not uncommon for a key person to be missing from the meeting because he/she
was at another meeting at the same time ... g
sold IBM in bits for about 4 years .. .completely exited about 6 mos. ago @ 196 ...
i see a redux of 1991 ... IBM could sink to 140 , maybe even the 120's .. then we have to see if the
toads are pushed out and some fresh minds enter ... the patent trove could be levered for tremendous
revenues and the services will do okay to things floating ..
I expect another shoe to drop with a div cut some time next year ... this is a house of pain for a while ... g
i know .. hence my concern for Emagin's fortunes ... i'm sure that
whatever they have been paying for leases has been and is a
bargain ... IBM will still maintain development at EF , but who knows
for how long ... they do have a presence in Albany area and could
move the development up there ....
The manager would stress over which words to use for minutes at a time in our presentation to his higher ups
a bit LOL .. i could never master the correct words and was not invited to
final meetings ... only the preps ....
