Perhaps you can clarify by explaining why he is "toxic waste". Has he done something illegal? Is he unlikely to be employed at high levels elsewhere in the financial industry if he were to leave Cohen and company.? If so, why? What do you know that the WSJ reporter didn't seem to know.

In my experience, smart people who come up with good ideas tend to come up with more of them. It is also my experience that they get called nasty names here and

Because the guy left Merrill long before the fan started whirring and because the guys who succeeded him at Merrill were obviously less conservative than he was. Read the article. They did four times the business he had budgeted for over the past year. Hard to imagine that the drastic increase didn't have something to do with their big losses.

There is every indication that RAS saw this coming. They certainly prepared for it, especially with the class C preferreds, which apparently took them out of significant bank debt (and the risk of margin calls) just in time.

I don't know that the guy from Merrill sold Merrill the junk portfolio. Merrill had been doing significant business with RAS for a long time before he changed horses. It certainly appears, however, that Merrill significantly expanded its Mortgage holdings at just the wrong time (and apparently against the advice/plans of the guy who left).

One of the hardest things to do, when you are in a bubble that you helped create, is to recognize the bubble and minimize the risk of the bubble to your company and investments. The Cohen companies (and especially RAS) appear to have done this. It doesn't matter who recognized what was coming. What matters is that they made a great adjustment.

Providence. Welcome back. Your puppetmasters let you loose again? Haven't they figured out how ineffective you are?

If you were actually shorting this I'd give you good advice (Cover now), but since its just an $18 an hour gig I'll just remind everyone of how much upside this company has: We'll be over $30 in 2 to 3 years.

Invest now while its low. Sooner or later the clowns who are paying this guy will have to cover.

Bankrupt is paid to say things like that. $17 is way more likely than $7, especially with the key solutions to the now ending credit crisis in place.

Of course RAS never had much to do with that crisis anyway. Taking the price down to where it used to be was just a big con job.

We really don't mind that you don't want to own a stock that is going to go up 300% or more from its current price, Fallback. Its what we expect of $18/hour boilerroom artists. You wouldn't stick with the stock if you owned it anyway.

And don't worry, nobody is going to sue you, fallback. They might investigate you to find out who owns your ID, what other IDs they own, what hedge funds or terrorist organizations pay those owners, how much they pay you, what taxes they are evading, etc. That's all. It shouldn't touch you at all aside from the questions. Will your company pay you by the message for answering those questions? Hmmm. Less

Because the market manipulators who have been trying to control the price of RAS are having a hard time doing so lately; so much so that they can't seem to spark on demand selling through shorting, selling against the box, bashing, or other familiar tactics.

Lately they've been getting desparate and attacking individuals who they think are getting in their way. They did the same things back in September, but now its getting serious. Less

There is a whole family of them. They work together through several companies. Say what you will, but Daniel, the one I would guess you are referring to, did a pretty good job of positioning RAS before the credit crisis hit. They entered July of this year with NO callable debt (a situation they were not in eights months before) and a portfolio that had been expanded into Europe. I can't think of another REIT (except, perhaps, JRT, with its special servicing business) that is as well positioned to capitalize on this real estate downturn.

Their stock price is stupidly low. Less

RAS is not currently an investment advisor. That is easy to determine from its filings. RAS has not been an investment advisor in most of the years it has operated. It not describe itself as an investment advisor in any year before 2009 and has not described itself as an investment advisor since 2011. RAS did describe itself as an investment advisor, for some limited purposes, between 2009 and 2011, so I was wrong to to say "has never been". It is that change that opened the door to the SEC. The timeline still doesn't fit the facts. Taberna VIII and IX were completed as securitizations before RAS added investment advisor to the hats it wore. It still bought the TruPS contents of Taberna VIII and IX from a third party investment advisor. It drops investment advisor from the list of things it does immediately after the SEC starts its investigation.

Thanks for pointing out my oversight. Unlike you, ghost of buckshot, I always admit when I get something wrong. Yes, there is a roughly three year period when RAS claims to act as an investment advisor. It still does not appear that RAS violated the securities laws in question for the TruPS they bought from Cohen and Company in 2007 and early 2008. That remains, from where I sit, an invention of the SEC.
