SJF … Check out Betty Liu at
I believe she is definitely your type. If you are a good boy she might be your Xmas present … JD
Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Michel Combes, chief executive officer of Alcatel-Lucent SA, talks about the restructuring of the French network-equipment maker. Combes, speaking with Betty Liu on Bloomberg Television's "In the Loop."
Liu: Good day Michel and thank you taking the time to speak with us.
Combes: It is my pleasure.
Liu: BTW, that is a really cute dog you have there. What breed is it?
Combes: He is a French Poodle.
Liu: So cute. But he appears to be sitting in a pool of water.
Combes: The French are accustomed to #$%$ away their time.
Liu: I would like to ask you about the US market. Your two big customers there, AT&T and Verizon, have spent quite a bit in the first half of this year and it appears to be slowing. Any comment?
Combes: I fully expect the growth will continue to grow and grow more over the prior growth.
Liu: I think I understand what you just said, but these two customers spent most of their 2014 CapEx in the first half of the year leaving less for the second half of the year.
Combes: I believe you are mistaken.
Liu: Michel, from our numbers, it appears that AT&T will spend around 20% lower in H2/14 than they did in H2/13, and VZ around 11% lower. Any comment?
Combes: I think that I just stepped in French Poodle Poop.

Little Sammy, it is good to learn that Alcatel believes in cleaning up after cooking … JD
PS: I heard that Alcatel has hired as consultants Rich McGinn to provide insight into clever bookkeeping techniques and Carly Fiorina to manage personnel cutbacks because of her talents to do it with a smile.
I believe it should be mentioned that when the Board of Directors at Lucent finally recognized that Rich McGinn would have been a better cook than CEO and kicked his #$%$ out the door, that they severely punished him by forcing him to take $12.5 mil in severance … JD
Where do they come from?
No, Little Sammy (aka jacdurk’l’n) I’d be bad if I didn’t bring up some of the reasons LU management did what they did that led to the meltdown in the LU stock price.
Over the course of the next few months we will start to learn more about the Shift Plan’s progress – or lack thereof. We are now learning more about Alcatel’s incentive program to award management for the successful completion of the plan. The awards are based on the relative performance of ALU’s share price and on free cash flow. At a Shareholders Meeting on May 28, 2014, two resolutions were proposed and passed related to incentives: Resolutions 20 and 21. Information on this can be obtained at the company’s website.
I am not suggesting, nor believe, Alcatel management might step over the foul line to obtain these incentive awards, like McGinn and his crew did, and like management did in far too many other companies, but boys will be boys when there is serious money on the table. What concerns me most is the blind trust investors too often place in the guidance provided by management in the companies they invest in … JD
SJF … Well … I’m on the sidelines line now. I thought it would break through the $3.15 down to $2.92, per Cathy. Once it bounced off the $3.15 I covered. I’ll talk with Cathy over the weekend to check out the next trade. BTW, completed the sixth swing, 3 long and 3 short, and up around 80% in 2014. Not bad considering the long baggie clowns have been sitting on their #$%$ doing nothing and are now down around 25% for the year … JD
I hope that no one believes from my post that I am suggesting that ALU has inherited from LU clever cooking-of-the-book business practices, but my sources have told me that Alcatel has dug up Julia Child and put her in charge of the company’s books … JD
Good luck with your investment in ALU. I’ve only been swing trading; going long/short for brief periods. Don’t mind me when I poke fun at the guys who are long when I’m on the short side. I just like to play with their minds. I may consider a long-term investment if the 2015 numbers look good … JD

I had a graduate student working at Bell Labs at that time and he told me about the dismal morale due to McGinn’s antics. It also hit him $ wise because his retirement was tied to LU stock. As a rule, I pay no attention to what CEOs have to say as to future projections, rather, I wait for the numbers to speak for the company’s progress … JD
Cardinal rule of resume-writing: Don't make stuff up. Or, if you happen to be like former RadioShack CEO David Edmondson, at least make up lies that are even remotely likely to be true. Edmondson apparently thought he could get away with claiming to have received two degrees — one in psychology and one in theology — from Pacific Coast Baptist College in California (now called Heartland Baptist Bible College and located in Oklahoma). The problem was that Edmondson finished only two semesters at the school — which has never even offered a psychology major. He admitted in 2006 that he had falsified the resume, resigning in disgrace after nearly 11 years at the company and having recently been promoted to the top of the ladder ... JD
Little Sammy, the huge loss you suffered though the LU collapse led to your nervous breakdown that further led to your multiple personality disorder. HELLO, DR. FREUD, ARE YOU OUT THERE BECAUSE LITTLE SAMMY REALLY NEEDS YOUR HELP – LMBO! … JD
LOL! Now that is good !!!
SJF … Something just occurred to me that I wanted to talk to you about. If I’m not mistaken, I don’t believe that Little Sammy ever named his boat. So I was thinking that you might want to consider starting a contest where the bored members would suggest a name along with why they feel the name fits our Little Sammy. Of course, to make it worthwhile to them, you will need to offer an award to the member who comes up with the best name. Give it some thought … JD
Little Sammy, listen to wireless when he advises location, location, and location. I’ll loan you my empty scuba tank and my 50lb diving weight belt so that you take a dive off your two oar JC Penny inflatable rowboat and visit Davy Jones' Locker … JD
I shorted Nortel after Frank Dunn became CEO because, like McGinn, he was also playing games, and I made out very well. I think it is important that investors in any company not to put blind faith in the company’s management … JD
