Spansion and Macronix, both top 10 customers, reached a settlement agreement with each other in their lawsuit.

IMOS doing alright today and 8150 did great last night. Let's hope that's just the beginning. We're around $5 below the equivalent price for 8150.

Thanks Sean, hadn't seen that. There's been some huge options activity on it in recent months. Months ago I bought some of the first Aprils and now there are many thousands.

Looking forward to another get together. However, like Jay said, I kind of thought a year later the price would be a bit more impressive.

There's a couple digitimes article. One that's already out saying that the first quarter will be down 5%-10% compared to the fourth quarter...5% would be pretty good, 10% would be more typical. The other one isn't out yet but is indicating that 30%-40% of capex will be for driver IC testing.

I was quite pleased with his presentation. He has good business sense and makes conservative deals that are extremely likely to have a good return and low risk.

I wrote another seeking alpha article on the company earlier this week.

There was a good TSEM audio presentation at the Needham conference today. MU also appeared there, and they've really been unfairly punished in recent days.

generator, if you mean the spin off by Israel Corporation, there should be no effect. Israel Corporation is spinning off an investment arm, but there's no sign at this point that they want to liquidate their position in TSEM.

Not a lot of profit coming out of ThaiLin, though there's a huge amount of cash. For instance, the cash they got from selling the IMOS shares a while back. The merger won't really change much, like buy said, except to expedite things. I thought it would be the last step so it was interesting that it's not. I think it's unavoidable that it takes as long as it does (or at least, the infamous lawyers make it so)

4th Quarter will be very strange based on FX

Good point Caff. The weak Taiwanese currency definitely makes the situation look strange.

With some of the companies (such as Micron and Spansion) having dollars and hiring ChipMOS who spends NTD, it effectively lowers ChipMOS's costs or prices, so that's a good thing. On the down side, a weak NTD lowers the value of future dividends or other distributions from the company, and lowers the equivalent value of an 8150 share.

I hope they've learned their lesson and used at least a price limit up to the equivalent value of 8150. We're still significantly below that.

What happened to all the SA articles on MU?

A lot of what needed to be said has already been said, and not a lot has happened lately. It continues to be on track with pricing and supply/demand remaining strong.

    I haven't sold my position.

rtpaulhus, there's no chance of that. Go to "trading halt" on wikipedia, then go to the section "trading suspension", you can then follow from there to a list of past trading suspensions on the SEC site. A complaint against Chardan will have no effect on the trading of HIMX, and will probably not have any effect on Chardan either.

    Margin downfalls

    by stickboy54321 Nov 20, 2014 2:06 PM
jaretwilson jaretwilson Nov 20, 2014 5:26 PM Flag

stickboy, if your transaction costs are a measurable amount then you are trading too often. Find something undervalued and hold it until it's not undervalued. Most investors hurt themselves more than help themselves by frequent trading, and that's not even accounting for the tax and commission amounts.

Never use so much margin that if things continue to fall much more than you expect, that you'll be forced to sell at a bad price. I disagree completely with the commenter that suggests using stops -- if something has dropped to a better value, you should be buying more, not automatically selling. You don't want to be buying high and selling low, and you don't want to be stopped out of a good investment due to volatility.

    turturo and dave,
My interpretation was also that SK was saying that the ThaiLin merger would not necessarily stop them from other actions. My hope is that at a minimum, once the ThaiLin merger is approved by shareholders in December (I can't imagine it not going through), they can proceed as usual even though there will be further work to do to finish it up.

    sean,
I agree they should have already been buying during the October correction, or long before for that matter. However, I have no complaints about them doing the SPIL buyback even though we're now at a lower price, and I'm glad that they didn't wait 30 days with the current buyback. I'm assuming they bought the maximum amount today, at a good price. I really hope they realize that $15 million should just be the start and that they should begin another very shortly after this one concludes. Every portion of the company is filled with cash...at a minimum the Bermuda cash should be put to productive use as soon as possible.

    Let my STOCK go....

"They can't bid the stock up so basically someone needs to sell to them." -- I'd say that's not a problem lately. Someone is definitely willing to sell to them. I guess we get the chance to retire a few shares at a surprisingly low price.

Solid fundamentals are what matter to me, the price will then take care of itself. That said, I thought the price would take care of itself a lot sooner than this. 2015 will see a lot of catalysts: the multiple portions of the corporate streamlining, a much higher dividend late in the year, growth from multiple areas (Toshiba alone is a big one, not to mention 4k TV). The fair value for this thing is a moving target, and it's moving in the right direction.

    Another great call by Jaret.

jaretwilson jaretwilson Nov 13, 2014 4:10 PM Flag

Thanks Bob. I think it's just the beginning for TSEM.

Surprised that IMOS didn't do much better today, can't imagine who wants to sell after that call which was pretty positive on business prospects. Add to that the immediate (though small) buyback and the sellers seem short-sighted. I'm really glad to see them making the buyback immediate this time rather than their customary 30 day waiting period which has always seemed unnecessarily conservative. They also made clear that the ThaiLin deal doesn't hold up other portions of the streamlining process, though I'll still be surprised if they happen in 2014.

Well that's interesting, a merger with ThaiLin. I didn't expect to see that today.

I have another TSEM article out today, but it looks like IMOS is the one with interesting things happening.

Glad to hear it Sean. I picked up some more TSEM calls around that same time and wish I'd gotten even more. I'll be in that for the long term. There were a lot of amazing deals with the semi correction -- could have written about half a dozen new things no problem, wish I'd had money to put into a bunch of things.

Agreed about being overweight here. Would love a good chance to spread it around a little more, but I can't sell any at this level without feeling foolish. I haven't been posting much lately as it's turned into just a waiting game. The business is great, they just need to get this deal going. They are sitting on a huge pile of money that needs to get put to productive use.
