    Broaden expectations, friends!

You we're not following GTAT in 2009, 2010 and 2011 then as they were growing quite a nice solar business - before the collapse.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

  • Lots of people are giving us advice, but some of us actually understand the company, know the people who are running it, have seen their track record and think we are in on the ground floor of one of the next great American companies.

-GTAT is the foundry of the solar industry - all of the major module makers have GTAT reactors and furnaces
-All of those same major players are at GTAT's door to partner with them on Merlin technology.
-What might be the greatest company in the world at the moment, Apple, chose to partner with them to encase all of their new products in sapphire
-They are innovators with Merlin, Hyperion, next generation solar mfgr equipment, sapphire etc.
-They have identified and are marketing into multiple streams of very large revenue at the same time they are creating 10's of millions of sapphire covers

-They have given forecasts that, if you know the company, are conservative and not aspirational as that idiot analyst said this week. I'd fire him for using a word like that in that context. Have you ever heard ANYONE, EVER use "aspirational" to describe a company's guidance.

-And by "broaden expectations" I don't mean for the next week. That craziness will take care of itself. But look out a year or two to what they are doing. Not only creating the products that create the products, in a number of cases they are going to be making the end product; as in sapphire and merlin, which will add continuing revenue streams.

About 1964 IBM introduced the mainframe computer. Some people got it right away - Tom Watson, Jr bet the company on it. It took longer for most to understand the power that would be delivered by the series 360 computers. IBM's stock rocketed forward over the first few years as people began to get it. There were days on end when the stock would rise $10 and $20 a share once people did "get it." GTAT may not be that transformative, but they will be in the ball park with MULTIPLE transformative technologies.

My guesses for who the big 4 will be: First Solar, Sunpower, Canadian Solar and Trina Solar. (I don't know enough about JKS or SCTY.) Thoughts?

Beansie, with the introduction of any new technology the cost is always high. As it gets perfected, as improvements/innovations are made costs drop and profits rise and prices drop also. This will be no different, although a lot of analysts will play with that information to suit themselves & their clients.

With the analysts lazy thinking, expect that GTAT should move right back up again. Every time one of them opens their mouths they make people nervous, but this is not a 2m share stock. It should rebound very nicely with the market.

  • The game on Wall St. is do anything for an edge - cloak it in nonsense language so they can't come back and get you later. SEPTEMBER 9 IS TWELVE DAYS AWAY! Even an idiot at Goldman's ought to understand that is near term.

Dockstylephil mentioned that Apple was building solar farms. I hadn't seen this before, but here is a blurb about what they are up to. Imagine if every large corporation starts doing this.

    I only said #$%$ - ridiculous.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

  • Just watched one of GTAT's videos on Merlin (its on youtube). One thing they tout in the video is that Merlin technology is ideal for large solar farms - it lowers cost, is lighter, and more efficient.

When Tom Gutierrez talked at Cannacord last month he said all of the key and larges players in solar are at their door interested in Merlin. He said that ideally GTAT will select 4 majors to partner with. Putting two and two together I would expect to see one of their major partners for Merlin technology be either First Solar or Sunpower. I also see a bent from GTAT to do more things here in the US.

This is a very big story that will play out over the course of the next two years. It is so hard to stay focused because all that Wall Street #$%$ causes you to trade in and out constantly.

Maybe they should apply the "Scunthorpe" technology on analysts who come out with nonsensical statements - like $100 for a sapphire cover.

Phil, I went back and looked at the INVN downgrade by Oppenheimer. The stock had just hit $24.34 a new all time high two days before. On April 1, Opp downgraded it, taking a $20 Price Target away (making it sound more ominous) saying essentially that INVN may run into more competition. Over the next 6 weeks the stock declined to the mid-$17's then began a miraculous recovery in the face of blistering competition and now sits at $25+ just off another all time high.

Yahoo's software thought it saw something in my headline - "Today's hit job" since I left the apostrophe off. The machines are taking over.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

  • Initially they got what they wanted - the price came down, Oppenheimer all but disappeared, and the stock came roaring back. Expect nothing less here - going to new highs very soon. Criminal but until the regulators regulate this kind of nonsense will happen over and over again. I wonder if anyone ever goes and looks at comments like Oppenheimer's 2-3 months after the fact.

$17.63 looks like a very good price - just a buck above the average since March - and a lot has happened since March.

Figure we're up a lot from here in a week, and a month, and a year. Forget about analysts - focus on good prices for a company with a VERY strong future.

I know they spent a lot of time with Mensheng in China over the last month, so it's possible. If it's them it would be significant. However, all those claims in the initial law suit are true, I was here then trading it daily several years ago. They did introduce next gen, etc a number of times. They did forecast $100m in revenue a number of times. There are a lot of promises with this stock. The leadership, who are 3 brothers are nice guys, but they have run the same routine (some would say scam) for several years.

Rejoice in today's gain and then get out. If anything will happen here it will take an extremely long time. My bet - back to $3 next week.

Incredible - we all own GTAT but introducing politics on the board splits everyone apart. Sounds like the daily norm in America. Until we get rid of the "political class" of professionals that are doing nothing to help the US we'll be stuck arguing with ourselves, just like they do. THAT IS NOT WHAT I SERVED OUR COUNTRY FOR. This is not what the US was created for. Debate yes, compromise yes, gridlock no.

In the meantime let's just agree we own a good stock.
