Well, it COULD be because Staples actually makes a PROFIT. The bottom line looks better in black than red all the time.

ODP as well as Staples are in the process of closing hundreds of stores at this time. I really do nto believe that a merger or buyout "at this time" is on the table. Maybe down the road when the dust settles from all of this restructuring they are both doing, but not anytime soon. That's just my opinion so of course, it could happen tomorrow. :)

It looks like folks might be a little leery of what is going to be said in the conference call. If they do not show black on the bottom line this quarter, I think it might eventually drop below $4. People are getting tired of hearing about synergies and money saved and whatnot. We don't like the color red. We want to see BLACK on the bottom line.

That would be like the Carnival Cruise lines getting talked into buying the Titanic. :p
Get the sip upright and THEN talk about a merger. Until then, Staples is doing just fine on its own.

Just to be clear: That was my post above.
I was logged into a business email sm_office_user

I WILL say this: If this thing makes a precipitous crop, I am back in. Because just as was noted: Somebody is going to say something about ta merger and it is going to pop back up over $5.85 again. It's like a frigging yo-yo. :)

Cramer also supports Staples buying ODP

They have not "eliminated" excess stores. They are in the process of doing that, the same as Staples is - hence the massive losses we are seeing. As I said: Staples MIGHT buy O.D. sometime in the future, but it won't be anytime soon. Both companies are in the process of closing stores and cutting costs. A merger would only cause problems at this point. Look at all the bleeding that O.D. is doing right now trying to right itself.

And you are correct that IF this happens (I believe it will sooner or later) the stock will go up. It just isn't going to happen now.

I just got tired of seeing "red". It doesn't matter if a company has 100 billion in earnings. If the bottom line is red, they have not made a profit, which is their way of sticking it to the shareholders.

  • It just doesn't make any sense to me. Staples makes shti loads of money, but gets downgraded. O.D. loses money year after year, and gets upgraded. I guarantee you that Staples will STILL be making more than O.D. five years from now. I have made money off of this thing a few times, but I still think Staples is the better of the two.

I'm out at $5.85. Good luck guys. I might get back in if it drops. Or, I might just hang onto the money and wait until the market crashes again, which it always does sooner or later. :)

  • justa_country_boy by justa_country_boy Sep 12, 2014 8:14 PM Flag

I had an automatic sell today when it hit $5.85.

For the first time in a great many years, I do not own any ODP stock. That said, you can bet your sas that it will start shooting up like a frigging rocket now. :)

If by some chance it drops, I already have a buy in place. What can I say? I am a gluten for punishment. :)

  • "synergies and efficiencies"
Have you noticed that they NEVER say when the bottom line is going to be BLACK instead of RED? If anyone is holding this stock thinking they are going to get rich, you need to sell now and move on. I doubt they ever pay a dividend like Staples does, and Office Max did. All we hear is more of the same over and over.

I believe that down the road, the only thing that is going to save O.D. is a merger with Staples and the firing of ALL of O.D. upper management, even the ones who are newly hired. Those guys look out for themselves and everyone else is collateral damage. Nothing has changed in this company since the last leaches were running it. And now, Smith is gone. I don't buy his reason. I think we might start to see some of his shares on the market real soon. Same sthi, different faces.

It doesn't matter what the naysayers have to say, hard copies are NOT going away. I remember back when computers started coming into businesses. People were saying that paper was no longer needed. If anything, computers have caused the use of MORE paper and everything that goes along with it.

I too think that O.D. will eventually merge with Staples.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

I predict that O.D. will see a black bottom line when it is finally bought out by Staples and Staples cleans house at O.D.

Well, how surprising, another loss. :p

If it weren't for the OfficeMax stores, Depot would probably be filing for be bankruptcy. This has to be one of the most ineptly run companies I have ever dealt with. I only pick one or two stocks (every few years) to play with on my own, and this POS had to be one of them. I am tired of hearing about what the future holds. We have been hearing that for years. It seems that the future should be here by now.

Lets see how much they stick into their pockets from this great quarter.
