  • "It's easy to start a domestic war, and the early-going is usually pretty easy, too. It takes a while for your enemy to wake up to the idea that you're systematically killing them and come to full readiness. Meanwhile, you merrily pick off the slow, the isolated, the unwary, and the ones who just can't believe it. That passes pretty rapidly. What follows is hell."

TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - A Florida police officer was killed in a shooting early on Sunday, and a suspect was in custody, according to a sheriff's office and local media reports.

The shooting occurred in Tarpon Springs, about 30 miles northwest of Tampa, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office did not immediately identify the slain officer or suspect, and did not give a motive. The Tampa Bay Times newspaper said the victim in the 3 a.m. EST shooting was a Tarpon Springs police officer.

The suspect was taken into custody after fleeing the shooting scene and crashing into a pole and another vehicle, the sheriff's office said in a release.

The Florida officer's death followed a Saturday afternoon shooting in New York City, where a gunman shot dead two police officers and then killed himself. Authorities said that shooter had indicated on social media that he might seek revenge for recent U.S. police killings of unarmed black men.

No further details were yet available.

  • Two Chicago men mugged Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s teenage son right across the street from the Emanuel family home on Friday night — and gave the high school senior a bloody lip and a chipped tooth to boot.

The strong-arm robbery occurred at about 10 p.m., reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Emanuel’s son, Zach, had stepped outside and across the street from the residence to make a mobile phone call. The two men approached the teen, forcibly examined the contents of his pockets and stole his phone.

There was a brief struggle over the phone. That’s when the fat lip and the chipped tooth happened.

    Neither assailant used any weapons.

The men fled the scene after the crime.

Chicago police would only say that the victim of a crime in front of Mayor Emanuel’s house was a male juvenile, according to CBS Chicago.

Police offered no description of the suspects.

Mayor Emanuel lives on the 4200 block of North Hermitage in the quiet, gentrified North Side neighborhood of Ravenswood. Because the mayor and his family live there, the police presence is typically high.

Emanuel said he is “crestfallen” about his son’s misfortune, an unidentified source told the Sun-Times.

  • Cloudy will be Cheering.......

Two New York City police officers were shot as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn, police said.

The ambush took place about 3 p.m. in the borough's Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood, according to preliminary reports.

A lone gunman walked up to the vehicle parked outside the the Tompkins Houses, near Myrtle and Tompkins avenues, and started "pumping bullets" into it, the New York Post reports.

According to the local tabloid, both uniformed officers, who were working overtime for an anti-terrorism drill, were killed in the attack.

“The perp came out of the houses, walked up behind the car and lit them up,” a police official told the New York Daily News.

Both officers were rushed to Woodhull Hospital, The News said

  • WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's new plan to ease the threat of deportation for 4.7 million undocumented immigrants violates the U.S. Constitution, a federal judge found on Tuesday, handing down the first legal ruling against the plan.

The ruling has no immediate impact, with the government saying there was no reason for Judge Arthur Schwab of the Western District of Pennsylvania to address the issue in the case, which concerns 42-year-old Honduran immigrant Elionardo Juarez-Escobar.

Schwab is the first judge to rule on the legality of the plan Obama announced on Nov. 20. The executive action by the Democratic president is opposed by Republicans and is already subject to other legal challenges.

Schwab ruled that the executive action violated the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of separation of powers and the separate "take care clause," which requires the president to faithfully execute laws passed by Congress.

Schwab says he ruled on the executive action issue because he concluded that Juarez-Escobar could be eligible for relief under the executive action.

Government lawyers told Schwab that Juarez-Escobar, who has pleaded guilty to re-entering the country, was not eligible because Obama's order does not affect criminal proceedings.

BO the Conqueror....It’s official: America is now No. 2.....

    From Market Watch.......

Hang on to your hats, America.

And throw away that big, fat styrofoam finger while you’re about it.

There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll just say it: We’re no longer No. 1. Today, we’re No. 2. Yes, it’s official. The Chinese economy just overtook the United States economy to become the largest in the world. For the first time since Ulysses S. Grant was president, America is not the leading economic power on the planet.

It just happened — and almost nobody noticed.

The International Monetary Fund recently released the latest numbers for the world economy. And when you measure national economic output in “real” terms of goods and services, China will this year produce $17.6 trillion — compared with $17.4 trillion for the U.S.A.

As recently as 2000, we produced nearly three times as much as the Chinese.

To put the numbers slightly differently, China now accounts for 16.5% of the global economy when measured in real purchasing-power terms, compared with 16.3% for the U.S.

This latest economic earthquake follows the development last year when China surpassed the U.S. for the first time in terms of global trade.

I first reported on this looming development over two years ago, but the moment came sooner than I or anyone else had predicted. China’s recent decision to bring gross domestic product calculations in line with international standards has revealed activity that had previously gone uncounted.

These calculations are based on a well-established and widely used economic measure known as purchasing-power parity (or PPP), which measures the actual output as opposed to fluctuations in exchange rates. So a Starbucks venti Frappucino served in Beijing counts the same as a venti Frappucino served in Minneapolis, regardless of what happens to be going on among foreign-exchange traders.

PPP is the real way of comparing economies. It is one reported by the IMF and was, for example, the one used by McKinsey & Co. consultants back in the 1990s when they undertook a study of economic productivity on behalf of the British government

  • Elizabeth Warren in 2013: Government shutdown is 'anarchy.' Elizabeth Warren in 2014: Shut down the government!.......

In advance of last night’s House vote for a $1.1 trillion spending bill, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) threatened a government shutdown if the bill included a provision that would allow "too big to fail" banks to use consumer deposits to engage in risky derivatives trading.

Though they may share Warren’s distaste for corporate coddling, critics have pointed out that the senator had a very different perspective on shutdown campaigns when Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) launched one last year:

You’d think that they believe that the government that functions best is a government that doesn’t function at all. So far, they haven’t ended government, but they have achieved the next best thing: shutting the government down. But behind all the slogans of the Tea Party and all the thinly veiled calls for anarchy in Washington, behind all that, there’s a reality.

And to show how Disassociated whit Reality he is......

Obama on America's racial divide: 'We have made progress'......

In an interview scheduled to air Monday, President Barack Obama said race issues spotlighted by recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the killings of unarmed black men are "not going to be solved overnight," but he added that it's also important to recognize the progress the United States has made on civil rights.

"This is something that's deeply rooted in our society, it's deeply rooted in our history," Obama told BET News in the interview. "But the two things that are going to allow us to solve it: No. 1 is the understanding that we have made progress. And so it's important to recognize — as painful as these incidents are — we can't equate what's happening now to what was happening 50 years ago.

"If you talk to your parents, grandparents, uncles, they'll tell you that things are better — not good, in some cases, but better," he continued. "And the reason it's important for us to understand progress has been made is that then gives us hope that we can make even more progress."

The president also encouraged young Americans not to give up the fight for equal rights.

"The second thing is ... we have to be persistent, because typically progress is in steps," Obama said. "It's in increments. When you're dealing with something as deeply rooted as racism or bias in any society, you've got to have vigilance, but you have to recognize that it is going to take some time and you just have to be steady, so that you don't give up when we don't get all the way there."

Obama's comments come as protests continue around the country in the wake of last week's decision by a New York grand jury not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July death of Eric Garner.

An NBC News/Marist poll released Sunday shows a deep racial divide when it comes to confidence in police.

According to the survey, conducted December 4-5, 47 percent of Americans say that law enforcement applies different standards to blacks and whites, while 44 percent disagree. However, 82 percent of African Americans said that police apply different standards based on race, as compared to only 39 percent of white people polled.

The poll also found that just 30 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama has handled the cases in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City, while 46 percent disapprove.
