There seems to be total confusion in the market concerning DEBIT card fees. The fees being disputed are the interchange fees. These are the fees charged by the bank that issued to the Visa card to the merchant who sold the product or service - or merchants corresponding bank. This fee is set by Visa Inc. but is not part of the Visa Inc. cash flow.
As such any change in the interchange fees should have a minimal effect on Visa Inc. profits. In fact a reduction in interchange fees could be beneficial to card companies as it could accelerate the change from cash to card transactions.
The Republican party has been hi-jacked by a small group of extremists hell bent a suicidal attack to embarrassing Obama by demanding the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Like it or not this act was voted in by both houses of Congress and judged fully constitutional by the Supreme Court. There is no way this side of hell that Obama will, or should, give in to these demands.
So what is the Republican Party going to do? If it carries on being dominated by the loony Tea Party group it will lose a great deal of public support on the run up to the mid-term elections and it will take them decades to recover.
Ultimately, if it is going to survive it will have to cut the Tea Part group lose and go it alone with a deal with Obama. This will be painful. The sooner they do this the better chance they will have at recovering some support and dignity before the coming elections.
Alternatively they will become increasingly irrelevant to mainstream politics.
For the Republican Party this is decision time.
