  • Flashback 1958: Arctic Ice Sheet Will Envelope NYC, Chicago

Much like today, scientists in the 1950s were warning that warming temperatures will melt the polar ice cap, raise sea levels and flood major coastal cities. The difference is that scientists in the 1950s were warning this will lead to another ice age.

In 1958, Harper’s magazine ran a lengthy story on “The Coming Ice Age” that featured research by geophysicist Maurice Ewing and geologist-meteorologist William Donn who argued the world was “heading into another Ice Age.”

Ewing and Dunn warned that “an Ice Age will result from a slow warming and rising of the ocean that is now taking place.” The two scientists argued that major American and European coastal cities would be submerged as the Atlantic Ocean rises. But that’s not all, Arctic ice melt “will cause great snows to fall in the north — perennial unmelting snows which the world has not seen since the last Ice Age thousands of years ago.”

Glaciers would be able to grow again and advance southward, following the routes carved out in previous ice ages — meaning huge swaths of Europe and North America will once again be covered by a permanent ice sheet that will eventually reach New York City and Chicago.

“It would, of course, take many centuries for that wall of ice to reach New York and Chicago, London and Paris,” Harper’s writer Betty Friedan wrote.. “But its coming is an inevitable consequence of the cycle which Ewing and Donn believe is now taking place.”

At the time of the Harper’s article, scientists were saying Arctic ice coverage had shrank 12 percent from the previous 15 years and the ice was 40 percent thinner. Friedan wrote that a “layman might surmise that if this trend continues the Arctic Ocean will be open and the Ice Age begin in another twenty years.”

But Ewing and Dunn said if “the ocean continues to warm up at the present rate… it is conceivable that there will be open water in the Arctic within about a hundred years” and permanent snow will start to be seen across America.

“We suspect that the ocean is already warm enough to melt the Arctic ice sheet,” Ewing and Donn told Friedan. “For some time it has remained at the highest temperature ever reached in the four previous interglacial stages.”

Oddly enough, scientists today are still looking to melting in the Arctic as a sign of climate change. It’s just that this time it’s global warming, not global cooling.

Climate scientists are now telling us that the world is heading for a warmer period because human activities have pumped too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is trapping solar radiation and heating the planet.

Scientists warn that the world could warm as much as four degrees Celsius if countries don’t drastically cut their carbon dioxide emissions.

But some scientists are actually still warning that the world could be headed for another little ice age — like the one that persisted from the late Middle Ages to the mid-1800s — based on declining solar activity.

“The stagnation of temperature since 1998 was caused by decreasing solar activity since 1998,” wrote Jürgen Lange Heine, a physicist with the German-based European Institute for Climate and Energy (EIKE).

“From 1900 to 1998, solar radiation increased by 1.3 W / m², but since 1998 it has diminished, and could reach values similar to those of the early 20th century. A drop in global temperature over the next few years is predicted,” Heine wrote.

For years now, more research has come out suggesting that declining solar activity means the world is heading for cooler times. Maybe there won’t be another ice age, but the world could get a little chillier if these scientists are proven to be right.

“For a long time after the ocean flood subsides, the only effect the Ice Age will have on us down here will be more rain,” Friedan wrote. “The new Arctic moisture that falls as snow on the glaciers will increase both rain and snow here, swelling rivers and watering deserts.”

“Then, gradually, our weather will cool. Icy winds will blow from the advancing glaciers; the great snows will fall farther and farther south,” she added. “In several thousand years a two-mile ice sheet may cover the United States and Europe. If man finds no way to switch the glacial thermostat, there may well be a real estate boom in the Sahara.”

Loons, feel free to refute what I have said and defend your precious hypocritical party of liars.

I know you love liars. It is what makes them eligible for president.

If there is a war on women, it's the Democrats/Socialists who are waging it. They gave a sociopath, sexual predator a free ride and defended him while trashing his victims. They call Paula Jones trailer trash just because she didn't play ball with Billy Bob Clinton and actually tried to enforce the sexual harassment laws on him. They called the women he molested bimbos. Kathleen Wiley was threatened for reporting that he groped her. They never called him a monster for what he did. Monica was called a stalker. A stalker? All Billy Bob had to do was tell his chief of staff to withdraw her WH pass and instruct the secret service to keep her away from him but did he do that? No he didn't! Instead he unzipped his fly.

Bill is a hero of the left. They love him. So who has a war on women, the Socialists or the republicans?

rd, just like the loons can't admit The Liar in Chief, the Clintons and Pocahontas are all evil one percenters and liars, The Divine One can't bring himself to call these ISIS thugs Islamic terrorists.

They all live in a denial fantasy land. Truth really does make their little pin heads hurt. Everything I have just said is fact yet the loons will never admit it is fact. They will change the subject and call you and me names.

  • How come the loony left wing losers on this MB can't bring themselves to say the same thing?

"At this point, Obama’s gross pettiness and rudeness are there for all to see. There is little argument that he has been trying to oust Netanyahu, creating a federal case out of a speech and dispensing aides to badmouth him on background to docile reporters. Obama obviously was a “loser” in one sense, but unlike the real loser (Herzog), Obama cannot bear to call and congratulate the elected leader of the Jewish state. This is not just an insult to Netanyahu, but to the democratic country that elected him. For goodness sake, Obama has called Vladimir Putin to congratulate him after an election widely believed to be fraudulent."

  • I a knee pad wearing Clintonista calls The Wicked Btch of the West a liar, why can't the loons on this MB do the same?

National Journal Senior Political Columnist and Editorial Director Ron Fournier said that Democrats are “scared to death” over the scandals regarding donations to the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton’s emails on Monday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel.

“Don’t buy the spin, they [Democrats] are scared to death. And there’s a lot of them who are already starting to think ‘is she really the best candidate for us?’…Their bench, compared to the Republican bench is awfully, awfully thin. And there’s a lot of Democrats, by the way, who are saying ‘follow the money.’ A lot of Democrats are really worried about the Foundation, that’s what they’re really worried about” he stated.

Earlier, Fournier said that the Clinton Foundation’s acceptance of Chinese donations is “a big issue. There’s a lot of other ways the Chinese government, and the Saudis, and the [Qataris] — there are other ways that they can help the world if that’s what they want to do. They’re giving their money to the Clinton Foundation for a reason. They want something out of it. So I know, what I really want to see in these e-mails is any e-mail that mentions the Foundation and mentions one of the donors.”

Fournier also commented on James Carville’s defense of Clinton, arguing that “what Carville did is give up the goods. What he admitted there was that this was not a matter of convenience, which is what the Secretary said. He admitted that the reason she did this was so she didn’t have to comply with the oversight of the House, and –and with the natural laws of transparency. He gave up the goods. He sold her out.”

Fournier added that while Democrats are right that no one’s votes will be decided by the emails specifically, “what they don’t want you to understand is this is a matter of trust. And you can’t lead a country, you might not even be able to win an election if the people don’t trust you, and we already see her trust numbers coming down.” And “what the Clinton people think is going to happen here is they understand everything we’re saying is true. The way they want to turn to the page is to somehow show how transparent she can run as a campaigner, that she’ll overwhelm the media with her access, that she’ll overwhelm the public with social media. I’d like to see that actually happening, but that is their plan.” He also declared that such a plan “cuts against the kind of public servant she’s been, but any little bit she does would look transformational.”

A Marine squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi terrorist who was badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state.

The Marine was conscious and alert and, as first aid was given to both men, the squad leader asked the injured Marine what had happened.

The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road."

I yelled to him, "Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife #$%$ who got what he deserved. "

And he yelled back , "Barack Obama is a lying, good-for-nothing, left wing Communist who isn't even an American."

So I said, " Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited lesbian! "

He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well, so does Nancy Pelosi!"

"And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a truck hit us."

When i proved to you that NPR was populated with left wing loons and was a left wing radio station I used real sources like the Washington Post but you used only sites that are proven left wing nut sites.

I am shocked and surprised to find out you are the moron.

Give me examples from Fox itself. Quote Fox lying.

I doubt if you can do it. You never watch Fox so how do you know Fox lies? You just hate Fox because Fox exposes the left as a bunch of hypocritical, lying thugs just like you are..

    Outsourcing in America

    By Ron Hira

You've spent twenty plus years loyally working in Information Technology (IT) for Southern California Edison, and eighteen months ago your boss tells you that they are going to study outsourcing but not to worry, "your position is safe." On the one hand you are worried because you know many stories of American IT workers losing their jobs to outsourcing, but on the other you feel comforted that you've been loyal to SCE and provide a critical service. Then eight months ago they tell you that they are outsourcing most IT functions and that they want you, get this, to train your guestworker replacement. If you say no, SCE will terminate you with cause and you would lose not only a severance package but also eligibility for unemployment insurance. This is the common story I heard from many workers at SCE.

The work that the 400 SCE IT employees do isn't disappearing, instead it and their jobs are being taken over by foreign guestworkers here on H-1B visas. Those guestworkers are employed by the two leading India-based outsourcing firms, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys.

The SCE workers are wondering: "Why should I lose my job when the work still needs to be done? Why is the government doing this to me and my family?"
Adding to the injustice of losing their jobs, the SCE workers are being forced to do something that is so common in the industry it is a term of art: “knowledge transfer,” an ugly euphemism that means being forced to train your own foreign replacement. The SCE workers are, "demoralized; in disbelief; beyond furious; down in the dumps; feeling anguish; depressed; feeling dehumanized; feeling humiliated; worrying about the future; worrying about paying the bills."

The SCE workers rightly place the culpability squarely on SCE executives, the president, and Congress. One worker simply said, "Shame on Edison for doing this and shame on our politicians for enabling it."

H-1B visas are temporary work permits issued by the U.S. government that are good for up to six years. The intent is for these visas to be used only when an American worker cannot be found. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor states, "The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) requires that the hiring of a foreign worker will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of U.S. workers comparably employed.”

In practice, the H-1B visa has been used for years to undercut American workers with lower-wage, and often lesser-skilled, workers brought in from overseas. How does this happen? Congress sets the wage floors for H-1Bs, and it has set it far below market wages. And the Department of Labor has chosen not to investigate the rampant abuse of the program. As a result, over the past decade, outsourcers like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have become the dominant users. Just over the past four years, Tata and Infosys received more than 33,000 new H-1B visas. That's 33,000 jobs lost due to those two companies alone. They use the program to replace American workers domestically while using their H-1B workforce stationed in America to facilitate the transfer of work and jobs to India. These are not immigrants in waiting, the firms sponsor virtually none of their H-1B workers for permanent residence (greencards). Instead of a way to fill skills gaps, the H-1B program has become a way to suppress wages and pad profits.

The practice of replacing American workers with cheaper H-1B guestworkers is widespread. It is so endemic in the H-1B program that last year the majority of the visas went to outsourcing companies. Indian Government officials have dubbed the H-1B as the "Outsourcing Visa."

Why do companies replace Americans with foreign guestworkers? The SCE workers rightly believe the motivation is "pure greed." According to a recent consulting report commissioned by SCE, the typical SCE IT worker is earning $110,000 while government records show Tata pays its H-1B workers $66,000 and Infosys pays $71,000. The savings go beyond just wages. H-1B workers have very limited bargaining power since the employers control their work permit. It should come as no surprise that H-1B workers are easily exploited. Those significant cost savings far outweigh the one-time H-1B legal and administrative fees of about $5,000 per worker.

The SCE workers I spoke to have a message for Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez: use your statutory authority to investigate and stop the H-1B abuse. If you find abuse debar those employers from using the program.

And their message to Congress is: close the loopholes that allow employers to use H-1Bs for cheap labor. Given all of these facts, you would think that Congress would be hard at work fixing the H-1B program. Instead, many are moving in the other direction, writing legislation to triple the number of H-1Bs while doing nothing to close the loopholes. The Skills Visa Act, introduced by Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), in the last Congress, and the bipartisan I-Squared Act recently introduced by the Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) would threaten tens of thousands more middle class jobs. However, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and #$%$ Durbin (D-Ill.) have been working for a decade to fix the program. They propose: raising the H-1B wage floors to the average wage; ensuring that American workers have a first and legitimate shot at jobs; and, ensuring that American workers aren't being replaced by H-1Bs. This would mean the H-1B program is being used for truly skilled workers and not simply cheap labor.
