Same body, 4 wheel disc brakes, Michelin Tires, about 200 horses under the deck lid, 30 mpg and i'll be the first in line to pick one up. Many years ago, i had a couple oval windows, a couple Squarebacks, too many Convertibles to remember, including 3 Ghia Converts ( one a 74 which was the last Ghia Convert off the assembly line according to the older Sisters who flew over to pick it up), but i never had a Split Window. Long live VW. The world wouldn't be the same without it....

The ego-driven variety, like king obama and trump, almost always crash and burn in the end. Money and power are very powerful drugs and they end up killing the Soul, which is the only jewel left in the crown....

The poor guy is a legend in his own mind. Unfortunately, there's so many braindead people in this country that believe him. The worst is yet to come for him....

The amount of fine mentioned is TOTALLY OFF THE CHARTS. It would be nice if the gov't would work for their money, instead of leeching off of big business, so king obama can spend it like a fool....

That car wasn't noisy, drafty or slow. It was a very cool car imho. If you want to talk horsepower:

In 64 and a senior in high school, i had a lt. blue 62 Ford 2-dr. 406, 405 horse, 4-speed, grey taxi cab interior and radio delete. That car was SCARY fast and i'm glad i lived through it.

i had a black 69 Ford Mach 1 Mustang, M-code 351 Windsor, 4-speed car for 20 years. i took it down to metal and painted it with Deltron. A SWEET CAR.

i gave my Son a red 69 Mustang Mach I, S-code 390, 4-speed car for his high school graduation and he still has it. A very nice car and i picked that one up for 5200 bucks from a Muscle Car lot. The owner was into Chevy's at the time and didn't know what a Mustang was. He moved across the street and is still in business and broadened his muscle car mind quite a bit.

If i walk out to the garage, there's a very nice 77 White Pontiac Trans Am with a built 400 with a nice cam, the big #16 heads, 350 auto trans with a nice shift kit and a beautiful black vinyl interior and dash. It's a blast to drive. i picked it up a couple years ago for 5700 bucks and that one is a keeper.

i used to work at a 55-57 T-Bird restoration shop in Renton for 9 long months doing nothing but mud work YIKES!! Frank was the meticulous owner, who took the cars apart, put them on a rotissorie, gave those rough critters to me and about 90 hours later, i gave it to Painter John for PPG K200, DP90 and Deltron topcoats. Frank took it back over to his bldg and put them back together by himself. Every last one were show quality.
A NICE, white 57 Ford Convertible came along one day. i saw the guy driving up hwy 99 and i followed him home. He had made a beer run and was having a party. i walked into his house and asked anyone who would listen, "Is that 57 for sale??" The owner said yes, but it's a lot of money. i asked how much is a lot and he replied 3200 bucks. YIKES....FOLLOW ME HOME....

About 30 years ago, there was an ad in Hemmings for a 54 for 900 bucks. It was located on an island off the coast of Maine. The seller still had it, so i contacted Flathead Red over in Renton, who besides overhauling flathead Ford engines, also picked up cars on the side. He said he had to take a ferry over to pick it up and charged me 900 bucks to do the job. It was bone stock with a decent body, but the pan was rusted bad. Back then a friend and VW fanatic had a store in Ballard that specialized in antique VW parts. He was a multi-millionaire computer guy and he would travel around the world buying VW parts and shipping them back by container. He had an amazing stockpile of NOS parts and would call me when a new container came in. i picked up nos front and rear override bumpers and nos turn signals for the 54 that popped out of the quarter panels. That also would have been a nice keeper, but i would have put it on a newer pan with a clear title and a healthier engine/tranny combo. 25 or 36 horse VW engines don't get the job done....

    72 VW Convertible

When the Scirocco hit America, they were one HOT item.
i picked up another convert the other day. i like the 68, 69, 70 converts. The 67 and older bring more money, but those newer ones are a lot nicer driving car. The convertible tops are easier to put on than the older ones. They have a lip around the back of the body and the Robbins top has a cable sewn in and all you do is slip that cable around the lip and tighten it. You still have to cut out the back window, which is no big deal. The 67 and older are a pain. They have no lip, so you have to staple the top fabric to the wood around the back of the body and cut it, barely covering the metal as the rear chrome strip isn't more than 1/4 or 3/8" wide, if i remember right. If it isn't done right, the water will run down inside the body. Old VW's are very cool, but i don't think they're as popular with the young girls as they were back in the day....

  • When i married my wife in 74, she drove a white 67 VW Squareback wagon, 1600 dual port intake and dual carbs that averaged 28 mpg. i liked the car so much that i bought a 68 Squareback, not knowing that it had electronic fuel injection. i loved that car and ended up chopping the top, taking out the side windows, turning it into a sedan delivery and stretched out the front fenders with Chrysler Cordoba headlight rims. i painted it a beautiful, burgundy metallic Imron and drove it every day, averaging 38 mpg. One stretch through Montana averaged 45 mpg. The distributor had an upper, adjustable set of points that fired the plugs and a lower set of points to fire the injectors. i put about 80,000 miles on that car and never changed or adjusted those lower points or changed out the brain. Very cool 68 German engineering at its best. Has the automotive world really come that far in the last 47 years??

    You also could have bought:
    eqix at 55 cents
    inap at 20 cents
    vixl at a buck
    tso at 3 bucks
    etc, etc, etc,
and if you had enough $$$$ to hold on to them and not addicted to trading, you'd be "in the money", but being in the money won't be worth a cent, when you're six feet under or in a jar....

in the cul-de-sac west of us. A nasty wind storm blew through the whole area last Saturday and we lost power for 26 hours. We didn't lose any food, but it was close. Talking to the neighbor across the fence a few days later, he said his and four other homes were connected to that generator. Good neighbors and Honda generators are very cool....

and a year later moved back to France with his new bride. i did a torsion spring change today for his 37 year old Son, who related a few stories. He said they taught English in the schools over there from about his 4th grade and he now lives in Mill Creek with his wife and young daughter and he speaks perfect English. He said his Dad took one item back to France and it wasn't the 55. It was his new refrigerator, which is still working. Some customers are a trip and this guy took the longest ride. i invited him over for a ride in the 77 Trans Am and i hope he takes me up on it....

Did a service call yesterday for that young whippersnapper. There was a 3 or 4 year old blue Mustang, V6, 6 speed variety, in the driveway and it was HIS driver. He said he paid 16 grand plus tax for it new. i didn't believe it until he pulled out the original invoice. It's always nice to work for a talk to these young guys....
