Anyone notice the revenues were all lower and the core earnings was a small miss?
The dividend increase (after they had announced there would be none this year) was a distraction.
In this market we are fortunate this isn't at 18.

After the pipeline is built we will no longer be dependent on the middle east for oil.
(The original purpose for the Department of Energy)
As for the jobs, there will be a lot more than the "shovel ready" jobs we spent 800 billion on in 2009.

Question for the Global Warming Skeptics

I don't believe because none ( zero) of the 72 + computer models (by the "experts")were even close to predicting the lack of warming over the past 17 years. The assumptions are either wrong or all the models were set to increase to insure continued funding.
    Greatest scam in history.

Core earnings were a miss by $.02 from Yahoo estimate and year end was off too.
Good news on the other items which boosted gross earnings. Would have liked to see better "core" and not so much in "adjustments".
Still solid and will benefit from higher interest rates as the FED tapers.

The past week has seen excellent volume and perhaps a bit of a short squeeze at the close today.
There may be some rumors about the quarter.
With no news that I have seen, I believe the expectation is for higher interest rates which will help the bottom line.
    All speculation at this point.

If you look at the facts, after the court battles etc. Jessie, Al and the other usual suspects went down and counted the ballots - and Bush still won. That is why the MSM stopped talking about it.

Why limit it to Benghazi ?
Benghazi -Obama and Hillary lie - Americans die - Media covers.
Fast and Furious - Obama and Holder lie - an American dies- Media covers
NSA - Obama lies - Media covers
IRS - Obama lies - Media covers (Nixon was impeached for the same crime.)
Health Care Act - Obama lies - Media covers for three years - when "the middle class" got screwed and will now be "fixed" by imperial edict. Media will rejoice at this gracious gesture.
    Notice a pattern here?
Eventually everybody gets lied to and screwed.
    Just not your turn yet.

Stock up on solid performance and good earnings.
Dividend increases will follow if earnings's strength continues.
Upside today equals one year of dividends.

    New to DFS

DFS can be compared to AXP (currently at a PE of 19). V and MA are very different businesses.

The stock has never been accepted by the Wall Street elite because of the ugly war when Dean Whitter bought Morgan Stanley and the subsequent battle between Purcell and John Mack.
That is history and DFS should eventually see similar valuations.
A note of concern - for the entire industry - is that DFS increased their reserves for the first time in almost three years. This may be a sign that they are reacting to an actual or projected increased level of defaults. A coming recession ?

ESPN has apparently hired Olbermann to do a regular "sports" show.
This to counter a new "Fox" sports channel.
Olbermann is so filled with hate and rage that I seriously doubt he will be able to contain himself to sports.
He has failed at every level of broadcasting and "discusses" issues by insulting those who do not agree with him.
This is a bad decision and will cost viewers - starting with me.
As a long term shareholder of DIS, I will be writing the company to express my displeasure.

    $.32 met expectations.
Insurance business down as they apparently raised prices where others did not .
    Wealth Management and Asia progressing.....
Extremely difficult environment with the Fed manipulating interest rates.
    Dividend still $.13.
I do not expect the dividend to be increased until the long term interest rates rise allowing for an increased bottom line.

With their increased dividend PRU will now be paying $1.85 on a share price of $59 or 3.13%. MFC is currently paying $ .52 on a share price of $15 or 3.46%.
Since MFC has moved up considerably in the past six months, the market is anticipating greater profitability. We will see................

Dividend cut was almost 4 years ago in the middle of the financial crisis that hit everybody. Get over it.
The company has taken huge write offs to "adjust their model" to the low interest rate policy being forced by the fed thus limiting their ability to do much of anything. The stock is up 45% from the May 2012 low and the current dividend seems secure (about 40% of EPS). I think management has done a respectable job considering the artificial interest rate environment they are forced to deal with. Unless long term interest rates move up they are going to be stuck for a while.

"We are pleased with the strong income we generated this quarter, however investment gains, and to a lesser extent tax items, were significant contributors that cannot be counted on in the future. It is as a result of this variability that we introduced the core earnings metric. Core earnings, which this quarter were lower than net income, helps analysts and investors #$%$ our underlying earnings capacity," added Mr. Roder.

So they made $.56 with extraordinary items and $.28 when you take extraordinary items out.
Technically a miss from the $.32 estimate.

We will see if all of the "happy talk" that proceeded the actual numbers influences buyers - or sellers.
