Whacko Richard must be scared spewing his rhetoric "lies, scam & hoax". It must be hard being you... When Energous succeeds, and they will, you will likely get trolled by a lot of people. Oh wait you will just change you moniker to something like John X Doe.
I know the tier 1 is going to lead FCC it's just nice to see an article by a respected publication not play the "FCC approval is a non starter" card. I guess I should call it the Richard X Toe card :). Speaking of Mr Roe, since is is so negative, I wonder if he is actually Hatem Zeina, the founder over at Osia.
Whoever the tier 1 is wants to dominate the wearable. Its a huge and largely untapped market plagued by poor battery performance and many of those watches cost a lot of $.
So Cota has a bucket sized transmitter that can transmit 1 watt 6 feet. That is way behind Energous. The stock is getting pounded, IMO because Energous went big out of the gate. Think about product cycles, a product comes to market then the next iteration is more powerful and so on. The management change was probably the result of that error in strategic thinking. When the tier 1 stepped up they probably very clearly showed them the product cycle they wanted which required a material change in direction for Energous (go small so it can be packaged with a wearables). That shift added a year to market and the market looks out 6 months. Bam.
Even if Energous had gotten FCC approval, the tier 1would still have to get their product approved. The tier 1 wants to get a low power product approved 1st to establish a protocol that higher power products can follow. I wouldn't worry about the bathers, let them do you a favor and average down... I think the great miniaturized transmitter is a beautiful result to the tier 1s request and the 3 mm receiver can fit into anything. 2016 Black Friday might be very interesting.
