Pole....I understand and have pointed out my distaste for MSNBC in the same posting. News has become entertainment......that is why I choose NPR over all the others. They are not beholden to Corp Sponsors.
In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.
Back in December of 1996, Jane Akre and her husband, Steve Wilson, were hired by FOX as a part of the Fox “Investigators” team at WTVT in Tampa Bay, Florida. In 1997 the team began work on a story about bovine growth hormone (BGH), a controversial substance manufactured by Monsanto Corporation. The couple produced a four-part series revealing that there were many health risks related to BGH and that Florida supermarket chains did little to avoid selling milk from cows treated with the hormone, despite assuring customers otherwise.
According to Akre and Wilson, the station was initially very excited about the series. But within a week, Fox executives and their attorneys wanted the reporters to use statements from Monsanto representatives that the reporters knew were false and to make other revisions to the story that were in direct conflict with the facts. Fox editors then tried to force Akre and Wilson to continue to produce the distorted story. When they refused and threatened to report Fox's actions to the FCC, they were both fired.(Project Censored #12 1997)
Akre and Wilson sued the Fox station and on August 18, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre was wrongfully fired by Fox Television when she refused to broadcast (in the jury's words) “a false, distorted or slanted story” about the widespread use of BGH in dairy cows. They further maintained that she deserved protection under Florida's whistle blower law. Akre was awarded a $425,000 settlement. Inexplicably, however, the court decided that Steve Wilson, her partner in the case, was ruled not wronged by the same actions taken by FOX.
FOX appealed the case, and on February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre’s threat to report the station’s actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida’s whistle blower statute, because Florida’s whistle blower law states that an employer must violate an adopted “law, rule, or regulation." In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a "law, rule, or regulation," it was simply a "policy." Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly. (Anybody surprised this happened in Florida?)
During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.
Doc - one should never glorify killing. Those service men did what they did because they swore an oath, and unlike Corp America can't just walk away when they see things they don't like. The truth is we should never have been there. A person that can so callously kill, obviously, has mental issues. All soldiers get brainwashed so that they can be turned into killing machines. I don't blame them, I blame these so called leaders that got them into those roles.
DickW - be fair now. Did you look at the study. It was questions based on current events....across the U.S. Fox viewers (those who only watch Fox) were least knowledgeable about actual current events, followed very closely by MSNBC. Both were shown that people who actually don't watch news at all could answer more questions correctly just by listening in their daily environments. CNN didn't fair well either. NPR was shown as being the most educating source. Did you get the part of me pointing out MSNBC was horrid too? My parents only watch Fox...and it is scary how misinformed they really are.
sorry, can't take Mr drugs for guns serious. He took the fall for Reagan....probably the only honorable thing he did.
sorta like Bush given Angela Merkel a shoulder rub.....the look on her face was priceless. Yeah, don't say it, I know he is no longer in office....yawn
It was a brilliant move by a Dem Senator......I think they didn't really read it.....where have we seen this before?
Pole, that was a good write up. I disagree that many on the left curse the military. They are more saddened at the loss of life inflected on both sides. Many innocents died and had to leave Iraq. We are upset with the leaders, Bush and Obama and Rumsfeld, et al, than the actual service men. There is a difference.
not a fan of how he treats our allies and Israel.....believe me....he does need to speak with Iran though...we need dialogue.
Well....can't comment on Nina, don't know what she said, I trust she did, and accept you are telling the truth. If she did, she should have been reprimanded. I like Diane.....I think she is fair in her interviews. I think we have to agree to disagree....I think they do a good job of covering a story.
Dickw - all I asked was show me the bias. I don't recall ever having seen anything that resembles bias there. Did you look up the study and how it was conducted?
yeah, no reason to be insulting to each other. Germany is beautiful.....best beer in the world!
Germany......now you see why it is funny, not funny ha ha, that a Jewish girl and I can make things work? Also, my friend is from a household that is half Syrian and half Jewish.....if that does not represent hope for the human race, what does?
I saw....and responded to it....then it disappeared.....weird. You remind me of my father....that is neither a compliment nor critique....just an observation. We can have the most intense discussions.....Mom won't let us talk politics anymore......only if she is not around.
Pole...NPR doesn't have left or right commentators....that is left to AM radio. They just report.....and they are really good at it.
Pole...you also have to consider economic reasons behind the facade that these people use. They were robbed off their resources by the West and resent it. It is not just simple a matter of religion. I think religion is used as an excuse to lash back at all the injustices we inflicted on them. Of course, there is a core group that is brainwashed into Jihad as well. It is much more complex than just a religious question.
Pole....who are the people that you refer to as loons that support ISIS? Who is supporting them? Last I heard, due to our bombing missions, the estimate is that we killed 6000 of those psychopaths.....that doesn't sound like supporting them.
show me the study was biased....or it is just your opinion. Let me know Dickw.....show me
Fraud......Mark wrote the authors name and used it to refute the piece without evidence. What does that make him?
careful Marky.......so you dismiss someone because of their name. Refute what was written or admit you have a racist streak within you.
