Lowering price targets on US refiners- Deutsche Bank (48.74 -2.18)
Deutsche Bank notes that the refining earnings upgrade cycle has rolled over and they are now in EPS downgrade mode, triggered by RINs cost warnings, then Tier 3 gasoline, and most concerningly, margins that have been well below consensus since the start of Q2. In this note they highlight the clear weakness of the US refining bull case: gasoline. Demand is tracking the secular ultra bearish argument, and inventories look generous with utilisation about to rise. While they buy the long term US refining crude discount story, they have just taken $10 off their view of Brent, implying a lower Brent-WTI.
