Why sell solar generated electricity for 5 cent a unit, while you pay 15 cents a unit to buy it? Storage allows you to consume what you generate.
Yes, yes you say everything is too expensive to be cost effective for solar projects, but folks said that a solar panel would never be as cheap as $1 per watt, but it is now.
The whole point of Tesla building a battery plant is to reduce the cost of batteries! I'm just saying that the battery plant has a massive potential for solar, as for the electric cars, who knows?
Lithium has the potential to be much more efficient than lead-acid. Bravo to you for going off grid installation. Australia has one of the world's biggest solar markets or may be the biggest, I'm not sure about that.
On grind systems sell the power to the utilities for maybe 5 cents per kWh, while purchasing power from the same utility for say 15 cent per kWh. That's a good deal for the utilities!
Storage will improve the payback for solar installations.
Tesla batteries, I believe, have a massive solar market, but the car market is what everybody is focused on now.
The reason there is no solar storage now is because there are no batteries that are cheap enough. That's the point of building a giant battery factory, to build more and cheaper widgets!!!
Why is Solar City running tests in Australia with solar storage systems?
Three years ago people like you were saying that panels would never hit the $1 per watt price, but it's here now. Yes from Chinese companies, but at least the Chinese are doing something useful.
Inverters, installers--all that stuff is dropping in price. Batteries are the next and last ingredient for solar domination of energy production. Tesla is in the drivers seat with batteries now.
Solar panel now sell for $1 a watt. In about 3 years, when those batteries start rolling out, solar panels will cost about 50 cents per watt.
Combining storage with low cost panels will make fossil fuel electricity obsolete.
Tesla is a battery play, not a car play. And the batteries are going into solar. F the cars.
Wrong. The factory they are building is to reduce the cost. The packaging of a solar storage system with these batteries would be about the size of a typical residential hot water heater. Just the ticket to outfit millions of homes so they can use the solar electricity they generate, and save the cost of buying power from the grid. Flow batteries, and lead-acid batteries are too big and expensive to be useful for home applications.
Well, in 2017-2018 the plant should be operational. Solar storage is bigger than the electric car story will ever be. This could be a multi-billion dollar business for Solar City and Tesla.
Tesla batteries could be the pot of gold for the company, but not in electric cars. Instead, those batteries could be packaged as storage for rooftop solar panels, so solar generated electricity could be used after sunset.
