It does not take an assault weapon to take down a man with an assault weapon, especially a man intent on shooting everyone in a room. It takes one well placed bullet.
However, the Terrorist had cased the place, he had frequented the bar. He obviously knew they usually hired (one) guard. One armed person. Removing the element of surprise for this one guard, and making it possible to suppress fire from this off duty officer. We also do not know how well this officer performed under such great pressure. That will be known over time.
But, had say 5 or six concealed carry persons been on location, and permitted to bring their weapons with them. Chances are, we would have had far less death and destruction on that day. Now, that does not solve every issue. Terrorist would eventually move to other means and tactics, even with a partially armed populous, but the reaction of the people would be much better than having to take a bullet just because some leftist politician says we can't carry our weapon.
Have more stringent regulation of concealed permit holders. Make sure they stay qualified, and well trained, but let them carry the weapon. Some day that person may just save the life of someone you love.
