It's not the risk of these ETF's that makes them a bad long term investment. It's the fees. When you're short, then the longs are paying your fee. In this case, one should just ask where is the market going this week? I think it goes lower this week so long is the answer. After that, then I would be short. Either way, if you think the vix will go down to 15, not the 12 we saw, but just 15, then being short is the long term trade

If you think that at some point this week the S&P trades below 2120, then the vix will go higher. I think we go lower but would rather wait for a trade. Either way, short UVXY or TVIX. This trade always works long term.

It's easy to see what side of the trade to be on each day by just looking at the futures. Buy looking at the futures premarket and then looking at the vix during trading hours, it's almost like having inside info as to the future direction. Seems too good to be true.

I have Scottrade and have shorted this before but now get a message saying "UVXY is not available for shorting at this time. Is this just a Scottrade issue or is anyone else having this issue?

    Sentiment: Sell

Thanks for the reply. It seems too good to be true. For some reason Scottrade is not allowing me to short this today. Says "shorting the UVXY is not available at this time." I only tried it with 100 shares and have more than enough cash so i'm not using margin. If there were not enough shares to short I get a different message. Perhaps FINRA or someone above is saying this is too risky. If this does pop to 40 then they don't wish to be responsible for the cover.

    Sentiment: Sell

How is this not the easiest thing to short regardless of where the vix goes? This pops when the vix does but look at the trend!! Back in Feb when the vix was about where it is now but the UVXY was 100. Even if the vix were to stay in the upper teens or even trend upward, this would still go down.

This thing is a mess no matter how you chart it. I would rather wait for the RSI to come down to the upper 20's. I would rather own this below 3. If I don't get it, then I've only missed a trade
