Verizon Should Buy Dish After AOL, Says Citigroup
BY REINHARDT KRAUSE, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) should buy satellite TV broadcaster Dish Network next, after AOL, says Citigroup in a research report.
Verizon could launch a mobile video service as soon as June that targets millennials, ages 18 to 34, with a mix of live TV, on-demand shows and niche, edgy content.
Dish Network's (NASDAQ:DISH) subscriber base and relationships with content providers could help Verizon in its Internet video plans, wrote Citigroup analyst Michael Rollins.
"The recent AOL deal suggests a legacy business did not get in the way of Verizon's strategic aspirations," wrote Rollins in a report. "In contrast, Dish has highly valuable and strategic mobile spectrum and also owns a linear video business. ... Verizon should consider the purchase of Dish sooner than later, which could elevate its wireless and OTT video strategies even further."
