Private spacecraft makes historic flight
White Knight carried SpaceShipOne up 50,000 feet, then released it.
SpaceShipOne reached an altitude of 62.5 miles (100 km) above Earth's surface during its brief flight this morning, making it the first privately built manned craft to fly in space, controllers said. The plane then safely landed back in the California desert where it lifted off aboard a carrier jet earlier in the day.
