  • Akamai, Cisco Partnership Eyed; Apple Worries Fade

Akamai Technologies (AKAM) is expected to start seeing revenue from a new partnership with Cisco Systems (CSCO) kick in later this year, as Akamai pushes further into hybrid private-public cloud computing services for large companies.

At its annual investor day on Tuesday, Akamai left its Q1 guidance unchanged. Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai reiterated its goal of growing revenue to $5 billion in 2020, up from $1.6 billion in 2013.

"Management continued to be optimistic on the market potential, as new product categories such as security, network operator and hybrid cloud optimization are expected to help Akamai reach its target revenue goal of $5 billion in 2020," Jim Breen, a William Blair & Co. analyst, said in a research report Wednesday.

Akamai's software runs on Cisco's network routers, under the partnership.

"The Cisco partnership will allow Akamai to expand its platform into corporate branch offices in a more expansive manner than with the Riverbed (RVBD), as Cisco has a greater presence and its routers are priced more attractively than the Riverbed equipment," said Breen. "Sales with Cisco are expected to begin in the second half of 2014."

Akamai stock edged up a fraction in morning trading in the stock market today, near 58. Akamai stock touched a 13-year-plus high of 63.15 on Feb. 28.

Akamai is the biggest provider of content delivery network, or CDN, services to media and entertainment companies. Akamai has been adding sales staff, aiming to sell security and cloud products to corporate customers.

Greg Miller, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, raised his price target on the stock to 68 from 63 on Wednesday.

    super akam news
"As government computing efforts continue to become more 'cloud focused' it's important that Federal IT staffs have confidence that their applications are designed to be as highly performing and secure as possible," explained Tom Ruff, Vice President, Public Sector, Akamai Technologies. "The ability to rely on an 'end-to-end' FedRAMP compliant solution is one way to make this happen. We believe this end-to-end solution will help agencies not only enhance their security posture but also see additional SLA's that begin at the edge and a much improved end user experience."
Akamai received a Provisional Authority to Operate (P-ATO) from the Joint Authorization Board (JAB) of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) in August of 2013. Agencies can leverage Akamai cloud services through Autonomic Resources as a front-end FedRAMP compliant data center solution. This model offers a unique "end-to-end" FedRAMP compliant solution that makes it easier for agencies to use shared cloud services in support of their cloud computing initiatives.

Akamai falls; Apple reportedly building its own CDN
    Feb 3 2014, 10:23 ET
Dan Rayburn reports Apple, which has heavily relied on Akamai's (AKAM -3.2%) CDN to deliver apps, services, and iTunes content to its customers, is building its own CDN.Rayburn states details remain scant about which services and regions will be covered by Apple's CDN, which is still in the build-out stage. However, he does note Apple has hired networking vets who "have a deep background in building out large-scale networks," and that it's "widely known that Apple spent more than $100M with Akamai last year."Akamai, which posts Q4 results on Wednesday, mentioned on its Q3 CC it's in the midst of price negotiations with a major client that's believed to be Apple. The company has already seen another major client, Netflix, migrate traffic to a home-grown CDN. Both Apple and Netflix have relied on Akamai for relatively low-margin media delivery services.Rayburn's report is overshadowing a bullish weekend Barron's write-up that calls Akamai "the WD-40 of the Internet," and praised the company's healthy margins, security services potential, and ability to benefit from further Internet traffic growth.Level 3 (LVLT -1.2%) also provides CDN services to Apple.

A man is driving down a deserted stretch of highway when he notices a sign out of the corner of his eye... It reads:

    10 MILES

He thinks this is a figment of his imagination and drives on without second thought .
Soon he sees another sign which reads:

    5 MILES

Suddenly he begins to realize that these signs are for real and drives past a third sign saying:

His curiosity gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive. On the far side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the door reading:

He climbs the steps and rings the bell.
The door is answered by a nun in a long black habit who asks,
'What may we do for you! my son?'
He answers, 'I saw your signs along the highway and was interested in possibly doing business....'
'Very well my son. Please follow me.'
He is led through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented.
The nun stops at a closed door and tells the man, 'Please knock on this door.'
He does so and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup answers the door.

This nun instructs, 'Please place $100 in the cup then go through the large wooden door at the end of the hallway.'
He puts $100 in the cup, eagerly trots down the hall and slips through the door pulling it shut behind him.

The door locks, and he finds himself back in the parking lot facing another sign:
