There is always an equal amount of shares bought and sold everyday. If the sells are not short sales, they would be regular sells. For every sale, the buyer acquires shares and in cash they are available for the broker to lend unless they waive that right, and if in margin there is usually the stipulation they can lend out at anytime. So back to square one, more sellers than buyers at current price
