The Viking Mine is a surface operation in Daviess County, Indiana, owned by Peabody Energy. The mine shipped 1.6 million tons of coal in 2008, which was trucked to a variety of electricity generating and industrial customers. The mine's 130 workers use truck/shovel fleets and dozer push to remove overburden and work two shifts per day, seven days a week year round, mining six different seams of coal. Viking has 8 million tons of assigned recoverable reserves.
