Live video-streaming app Meerkat announced a beta program on Thursday that enables some GoPro (GPRO) users to live-stream their footage directly from their GoPro device.

The company, which competes directly with Twitter Inc.'s (TWTR) live-streaming app Periscope, said the camera can be connected to the app via Bluetooth, and then prompted to stream by shaking the mobile device that is hosting the Meerkat app.

Meerkat created a lot of buzz in March and April shortly after it launched, with celebrities, journalists and people at live events, such as protests, using the app as a conduit to reach followers in a live-video format. However, its early success was muted after the May launch of Periscope.

The partnership is an interesting one for GoPro as well, which continues to expand the functionality of its cameras in an effort to become a media and production powerhouse.

GoPro has been joining with events and broadcasters to live-stream action-oriented events in real time. It told MarketWatch in February (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/gopro-is-building-a-media-empire-2015-02-05)that it had plans to increase the pace of deals related to content and streaming over the next two years. GoPro continues to explore "new and innovative approaches" to bring its content to consumers, a spokesperson said.

Earlier this year, GoPro launched a streaming channel on the LG Smart TV app. It also signed a deal with Vislink to enable broadcasters to live-stream GoPro content during big events. The GoPro brand has recently been associated with the Tour de France and MotoGP.
