rogers...I agree as we have earnings and 'net' earnings...that said, I make some mistakes, but I am on a roll as I had another outstanding day in the markets...not real happy with my ADM and NAO (but only have a few shares of NAO)...I try to keep working on my losers because my winners are doing fine, lol...! WMC was a nice surprise today....! $tagg...!

mark...I am always careful and I never buy stocks based 'just on yield'...however, I do not run away from holdings that may have high Total Returns...question to you, how do think DVHL and CEFL be affected by higher interest rates 'in the future' (at this time I am doing pretty good on both of them because I have dollar cost averaged)...! Thanks, $tagg...!

bayman...its nice to have a few home runs once in a while..i.e. NYMT, SFL, BDCL, WMC and etc.,...yet some investors still feel than high income holdings are losers...! Its still working good for me...! $tagg...!

sarge...I don't expect you to agree with me but I find it a bit strange that JF would buy 4 million share in a failing company...I am not always correct, but I am not always wrong either...it also looks to me like WMC is having OK earnings (???)...

More, APPLE has been a great winner and I am very happy for you...however, how many of us would have liked to held NEWM and NRF for the last year (???)...their will always be winners and losers, I just don't see JF throwing 50 million dollars away (it smells a bit fishy)...! No rose colored glasses here, lol...! $tagg...!

bayman...earning are now available on their website...the earnings are a bit hard for me to understand, but it looks like core earnings are up YOY and from the last quarter...however, book value is down a bit...! I still need to study the report some more...! $tagg...!

k-bon...SDRL's color is not terrible, 'not yet' and a long way from it...results can be eroding...I am not buying but JF has been buying a lot...! I don't know the answer but it looks a bit strange to me...Insiders 'Cooking the Books' for future profit is an old time trick that is very hard to prove...! $tagg...!

more...is it possible that the insides at SDRL have 'Cooked The Book' for future profit...???

step one...turn in lower earning for three quarters...

    step two...eliminate the whole dividend...

step three...buy up a lot of shares 'on the cheap' after the share price drops (and they have)...

step four...reduce some debt and restore some of the dividend (future)...

step five...make a huge profit on a rebound in share price based on strong earnings and a higher yield (future)...

That all being said, the insiders probably already knew that the fourth quarter earning would be strong when they eliminated the dividend...! Are the insiders Cooks and Crooks (???)...just something to think about as the 52 week range is $40.44 to a low of $9.18, very strange for a company with such good on-going color...I don't know the answer, but JF has now increased his stake in SDRL by 4 million shares at a average price of $12.16 a share...! $tagg...!

Board members...while is true that a lot of us got burned on the share price of SDRL (because they discontinued the whole dividend) and I also had to eat a lot of crow...the fact is, that SDRL's earnings are outstanding and the forward guidance is strong...earnings came in at 79 cents a share vs 62 cents a share estimates by Zacks and revenue was also better than expectations...

It is very strange to see a company perform so well and yet the share price suffer so much...SDRL is performing better than most of the stocks I hold, yet it has suffered the most price wise...elimination of the dividend spooked a lot of investors (they could probably have increased it), but the company is now stronger than ever...! I no long hold SDRL, but it is a shame to see a company with such 'good color' priced so low (a very low p/e, a better than 45% return on equity, outstanding book value, enough funds to reduce a lot of debt and etc.)...! $tagg...!

Bob...if I am not mistaken it looks like SFL's net earnings are up about 37% more in 2014 vs 2013 (I really like my SFL)...I have also been thinking about getting back into NRZ, do you think they will be affected much by a future increase in interest rates (???)...! Thanks for the feedback...! $tagg...!

  • staggman99 by staggman99 Feb 26, 2015 1:10 PM Flag

Board members...NEWM turned strong earnings and has increased the dividend by 11%...NEWM (Yield now about 5%) is up 86% in the last 12 months in Total Returns...! I wish I had never sold it, lol...! $tagg...!

Board members...unless I have made a mistake, it looks to me like SFL's net income is up about 37% in 2014 vs 2013...! Management also seems to give pretty good forward guidance...! $tagg...!

mark....I agree that I gave up a lot of profit on SDRL (and I am not the only one)....now I ask, how many kept EVEP, LINE and several others after sold them and took profit...

More, what about NEWM (???) it has gone up 94% since I sold it...what about NRF (???) it has gone up 354% since I sold it...I do not pick stocks based just on yield, what ever gave you that idea...?

I am doing fine on Ford (F) and it is not a high yield holding...again, I have made my capital in last 50 years, and I have done very well...I doubt you will still be trying to make big capital gains and build assets 20 years from now...

That said, I have done very well in corn, soybeans, timber, coal leases and a lot of other things...again, I agree that I gave up a lot of profit on SDRL and I also paid cash for a new F-150 4x4 truck last year (out of 'some' of my high yields)...

I am single (got divorce when I was 36 and I am now 73), but everybody on this message board that is married can lose at least half of everything they have if their wife leave them (it happens every day to somebody)...! We should never get 'to full of ourselves' as it can change very fast...! $tagg...!

sarge...yields are not king, but Total Returns are king...NYMT is now up 18.9% YTD and 50.2% over the last two years in Total Returns...some investors think they are losing money when they are not...I strongly suggest all investors get a Total Return calculator and use it....

When the markets retreated over the last five months, my high yields helped me dollar cost average and shop for more value...the only way to shop for value when the markets crash is to rob Peter to buy Paul, unless we have a decent on-going revenue stream...

For the record, I am having 'another great day' in the markets, probably because I am doing everything wrong, lol...in all fairness to mark, he is probably still trying to grow capital...20 years from now he may be looking for revenue stream to add to his retirement income...! $tagg...!

And now the debate (lol)...board members, I thought that the yields on REIT's and BDC's are based 'on their taxable earnings' (and not their competitors in the sector); therefore, a low yield is probably a warning sign (???)...! $tagg...!

That said, it looks like apple's 'Apple Pay' is a big hit going forward and is giving Google's 'Mobil Wallet' a run for the money...apple seems to really be on top of the game...! $tagg...!

sarge and gambler...I added KCAP to my portfolio because bayman brought my attention to it....KCAP has great color (key statistics) 'and a very nice yield'...at this time, I am up abut 4% YTD on my holdings; not real good good but maybe a nice start after a weak January...

More, bayman (even though he don't post very often) has 'a very long term record' of making really good investments and I always pay attention to his messages...! $tagg...!

sarge...I have started a new position in MLPL (I took a nice profit on it and now I am back in again at a lower share price)...oil and related industries 'will rebound' and when they do I will be adding to my current entry position in MLPL...

I have also added more to my SFL, BDCL, NMM and CEFL...I plan to start a position in HQL and maybe KCAP (very soon)...I am not happy with my ADM and NOA....however, my Ford (F) holdings have been making a nice difference....! $tagg...!
