Most companies emerge from bankruptcy, if they don't make it then Chapter 7 is filed for. In most bk cases shareholders get wiped out, which was the case for Kodak, United, Delta, Northwest, US Air and General Motors. The rare exception was American Airlines where the shares went form 25 cents or so to over $25 (not exactly sure of the conversion rate to the new AAL stock from AMR but should be around $25). The other one I am aware of was GGP (General Growth Properties) which went from under $1 to around $20. With the Apple debt gone, I think GTAT will emerge with shareholder value but how much is another question.
