It is good to know that you think about long term. People in USA tend to focus on short term. Hopefully, nflx can help to make China more open and make money along the way.
I just post the board what I read in a Chinese stock website. It does not have the answer about to what extent. All I can say is that in USA, people view the news positively. But in China, people think negatively.
They mentioned Youku. Youku's revenue is 5.74 billion in 2015 and nflx's is 6.79 billion. But Youku lost money in China every quarter. That is one reason that people think it is hard to make money. A lot of media companies get money from the government. But for a company to make money, it is a different story.
The reasons are
1 The government control the media. If you do not comply, the government will shot you down and kick you out. Google is an example. Therefore, the programs will not be interesting and people will not want to pay for it. The control to nflx is about money but to the Communist, it is life or death.
2 Chinese people do not value intellectual property much. You can buy a dvd for 50 cents. Many people will try to get TV/Movie for free by sharing, borrowing, copying and stealing. It is not like GM to sell cars.
3 In China, there are already this type of services and the competition is high.
One person said, it can get in buy not going to last.
