So when you are rated #496, what does that mean for number of units? And what about revenue since this is a free app?
FedEx seems to ignore the first few reports of a missing smartpost package. They claim that they send an email to some other department that is supposed to research it and it will take two days but nothing happens and you never get another real response. They may automatically send out a badly written legalese email to you explaining how this isn't really FedEx, it is some sort of distant subsidiary and they have no obligation to actually deliver the package (I think that is what it says).
Only if you complain really loudly and threaten to call the executive office do they actually ask for the amazon order number and what is in the package so someone can really look by which time all traces are gone.
Essentially, they are offering mass shippers a cheap alternative with bottom-of-the-barrel customer service. I'm guessing that the shippers compare the price against the loss rate and can live with those numbers.
But it really is bad news for the ultimate customers, us.
Am I the only one who cringes when they buy something from Amazon and then find it was sent by Fed Ex smartpost?
Smartpost just lost my package. Disappeared somewhere between the local terminal (logged in) and the post office (no record). Amazon, a world class company, is overnighting a replacement at their cost.
Fed Ex is doing an "investigation". But I'll have the replacement long before they find the package (if they ever do).
My hope is that Amazon keeps a very careful record of everything they spend to fix smartpost's failures. Perhaps when that number gets high enough, we won't find smartpost when we click on "track" any more

50,000!? That is a lot of sales calls - a lot of IT managers to be contacted; a lot of education of users. A lot of security questions.
For those with corporate experience - is 50,000 corporate licenses a reasonable expectation for an app?
As of this post, Hopto - free app - shows only 9 ratings and still only 4 comments. Although many never rate an app, this still seems to be less than a stellar showing.

Your question, notwithstanding the way it is put, is key.
Is this a real business or is it a fad? Advertisers will stay only as long as they get results which means views, clicks and purchases.
Or - will they overpay for a series of acquisitons and continue to reduce value?
Or - can they convert their many viewers into paying for some sort of service (subscribers)?
Or - can they merge with a real content provider (like Yahoo)?
I really don't think we know yet. I think the trend is still positive.

TWC offers a DVR recorder / tuner for the low, low price of $12+ per month. But that box gives a whole 10 hours of HD recording - old technology to say the least. Nobody, given a choice, would ever buy this in the retail martket.
For an additional low, low price of only $7.95/month, you can get a box that will give 80 hours of HD recording.
TWC - old technology; high prices; bad service. What more could you expect from a monopoly?
