I visited Canada and took a look at quite a few SWY Stores there. I have to say I was very impressed by these stores. The only competitor who came close to SWY there was Loblaw Superstore. The stores seemed to have better fresh departments than ALL competition with far better staffing levels, much better mix, and better quality than the competition. This reminds me of how SWY in the US was about 10 years ago. These bakery and deli areas looked so good, and had heavy traffic. Produce looked like a US SWY but this was again above average. Meat looked far better than competition and also had heavy customer traffic. Pricing was erratic but not out of line.

The other striking thing was the stores were so busy.

I got into a Sobeys "Thrifty Foods" and although it was a pretty new store it was very unimpressive. Inferior to a Safeway Canada Store in every way. Traffic was low and perimeter departments were anemic looking compared to the wonderful Safeway Canada perimeters. Center store mix was also less, and prices seemed worse.

I believe SWY Management made a very poor decision to sell Canada and that is what forced them to have to sell the company.

    Well, it's over now.

    Very sad.
