    Evening Jack
Out of the 'rat race' @ 48. That's impressive! Congrats
You beat me. I'm going to quit working for others on June 1st.
    I'll be 53.

"I rarely allow tax considerations to impact my buy and sell decisions"
    *******************************************************

I 'always' allow tax considerations to influence my buy & sell decisions.

I don't want to give the PARASITES anymore than I have to.

"Few of my positions contain under 1000 shares"
    ***************************************

I hold 17 dividend stocks, 3 REITS & 2 mutual funds in my
    taxable brokerage account.

Once any of these reach 30k in value, I begin taking the dividends in cash instead of reinvesting.

I use the cash to invest in those that haven't reached the 30k plateau.
But only when I figure they're oversold.

I use a 3 month candlestick chart with bollinger bands, 50 & 100 day moving averages, and MACD

Has worked very well. (so far)

    Regards

Almost forgot: At one point you stated….."you hold, you lose"
Was that meant for Kraft specifically, or don't you believe in buy & hold for any/all stocks ?

  • Disclaimer: I sold all shares of Exelon @ $36.575 on June 30th 2014

At approximately 11:21 AM on Friday August 1st 2014, I bought a hypothetical 100 shares each of EXC WEC SO & DUK & placed them in a watch list.

Prices paid

DUK 1OO @ 73.09

EXC 1OO @ 31.78

SO 1OO @ 43.45

WEC 1OO @ 43.75

I picked Wisconsin energy to be the best performer & bought shares in my brokerage account.

Returns As Of Monday March 30th

Wisconsin +13.03%
    Duke +2.61%

    Exelon: +2.05%
    Southern +1.29%

I got a wonderful surprise last week. I own 388 shares of Kraft foods :)
Anyone else here own it ?

  • stormfront2020 stormfront2020 Mar 30, 2015 8:23 AM Flag

I don't own EXC, but have to reply anyway.
How many years have we been talking about rate hikes now ?
Low interest rates are the new normal.

The US has transformed from a industrial/manufacturing economy, to a services economy.
This is proven by the fact that a majority of Americans now 'get back' more federal taxes than they paid in.
    The tax base is shrinking.

    This will end badly

Never in my wildest dreams, did I imagine something like this.

    Cont.

Let's say KRFT drops 5 bucks Monday. You would say I 'lost' $1,940.00
I would say my KRFT investment is worth $8,536.00 more than it was a week ago.

Those involved in this merger have a long history of success stories.

Unless something changes fundamentally, I'll hold.

    Regards

    Jack

I posted at 10:30 PM on Thursday that you should sell. You now say you made $ 2500
    additionally by not selling.
    **********************************************************************
I didn't pay attention to the exact time of your post Jack. I own 388 shares.
    Up $4.71 on Friday 388 x $4.71 = $1,827.48 My Mistake

You put $ 9000 of profit at risk on Thursday morning in the hopes of making another
$ 2500 on top of your surprise pop from Wednesday.
    **********************************************************************
So you would have sold Thursday morning ? If the answer is yes, read on.
This might be the key to this debate. My shares are held in a 'taxable' brokerage account Jack.
If I sell @ $89.10 Monday morning I'll be triggering a 'taxable event' The 'total' capital gains would be $14,576.75
This might sound like I'm being a smart*** Jack, but I'm not. Have you ever had a single capital gain this big ?

If you haven't, here's what happens. Since I'm still working, make about 65k per year, & have dividend income of about $1,200.00 per month, the capital gains would be taxed heavily in April 2016. Plus, unless I sent the IRS an estimated payment on these gains now, I'd also have to pay an 'underpayment penalty' to both the state & feds in 2016. Worst of all, how sick would I feel if the stock was substantially higher in April 2016 ?

Again from current levels, KRFT could drop in value in the future. I say don't waste your nice gains!
    **********************************************************************
I appreciate your concerns about me preserving my gains.
"KRFT could drop in value in the future" Sure it could. And so could any other stock in the universe.
I checked out JACK & PF. They are both priced to perfection IMHO. I'd say if you bought either of those, you'd be 'buying high'
For personal reasons I would never invest in citi, Dow is now overpriced after the spin-off announcement.
Will check out the otters later.

    Let's say KRFT drops 5

    ATTN: Dave & Jack.
Glad I ignored your advice to sell Kraft.
Would have cost me at least $2,500.00 already.

ATTN: Jack. Could you elaborate on the following statements.

    1- "you hold….you lose"

2-"take your profits and go find a better reward proposition"

Last time something like this happened was when I owned Caremark-Rx
Bought by CVS & that one also had a special dividend of $7.00 (if memory serves)

I sold shortly thereafter & that was a mistake. I should have held.

    So I guess I'll hold.

    Gotta be patient some times

Maybe B&G can pick up some of the scraps

As far as buying the better half a 4K Louie Vitton handbag.
No woman is worth that……….. well maybe Alyssa Milano, or Christina Applegate :)

    I own a sweet 388 shares

Do you own any jack, beef ?

    Have to admit I'm shocked.
I never dreamed Kraft would be purchased.

Warren says he's loved kraft products for years.

"If you like a family oriented company run by honest and decent people then you are in the right company with STB"

That's all fine & dandy, but I also want to make a decent return on my money. When a company 'goes public', they sell their soul to the shareholders.
Right or wrong, those are the cold hard facts.

    I bought my 1st 1000 shares on 01/09/2012, 300 more on 07/05/2013, 200 more on 01/06/2014, 300 more on 01/28/2015, & 300 more on 02/20/2015.
    I've also re-invested all dividends.

As of today, I'm down 10.73%

Let's pick up the pace STB!
