Warren E. Buffett first took control of Berkshire Hathaway, a small textile company, in April of 1965. A share changed hands for around $18 at the time. Forty-nine letters to shareholders later, the same share traded for up to $226,000, compounding investor capital at just under 21% per year -- a multiplier of 12,556 times.

In 2000, Sina Corporation made headlines by being the first Chinese business to list on the NASDAQ in New York using the 'Variable Interest Entity' ('VIE') structure, which uses contracts instead of shareholding to effect corporate control.

( THAT WAS OVER SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO ! )

Important technology companies such as Sina, Sohu, Tencent, Baidu & Alibaba are famous examples of companies listed on overseas exchanges that employ VIE structures.

They're the ONLY significant large privately owned companies in China, & THEY ALONE control ALL E-COMMERCE, INTERNET, & CLOUD-COMPUTING sectors in China!

But if scientists are too liberal & politicians too unreliable, perhaps you find the opinion of key industry representatives more convincing:

BP, the largest oil company in the UK & one of the largest in the world, has this opinion:
There is an increasing consensus that climate change is linked to the consumption of carbon based fuels and that action is required now to avoid further increases in carbon emissions as the global demand for energy increases.
Shell Oil (yes, as in oil, the fossil fuel) says:
Shell shares the widespread concern that the emission of greenhouse gases from human activities is leading to changes in the global climate.
Eighteen CEOs of Canada’s largest corporations had this to say in an open letterto the Prime Minister of Canada:
Our organizations accept that a strong response is required to the strengthening evidence in the scientific assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We accept the IPCC consensus that climate change raises the risk of severe consequences for human health and security and the environment. We note that Canada is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Have the environazis seized the reigns of industrial power, in addition to infiltrating the U.N., the science academies of every developed nation, and the top research institutes of North America? That just doesn’t seem very likely.

  • More than half US population lives amid dangerous air pollution, report warns reported on Guardian News.
More than half of the US population lives amid potentially dangerous air pollution, with national efforts to improve air quality at risk of being reversed, a new report has warned.
A total of 166 million Americans live in areas that have unhealthy levels of of either ozone or particle pollution, according to the American Lung Association, raising their risk of lung cancer, asthma attacks, heart disease, reproductive problems and other ailments.
The association’s 17th annual state of the air report found that there has been a gradual improvement in air quality in recent years but warned progress has been too slow and could even be reversed by efforts in Congress to water down the Clean Air Act.
Climate change is also a looming air pollution challenge, with the report charting an increase in short-term spikes in particle pollution. Many of these day-long jumps in soot and smoke have come from a worsening wildfire situation across the US, especially in areas experiencing prolonged dry conditions.
Six of the 10 worst US cities for short-term pollution are in California, which has been in the grip of an historic drought. Bakersfield, California, was named the most polluted city for both short-term and year-round particle pollution, while Los Angeles-Long Beach was the worst for ozone pollution.
Small particles that escape from the burning of coal and from vehicle tail pipes can bury themselves deep in people’s lungs, causing various health problems. Ozone and other harmful gases can also be expelled from these sources, triggering asthma attacks and even premature death.
It isn’t all bad news – the total number of unhealthy air days has fallen and year-round particle pollution has dropped as old diesel engines are retired and coal-fired power plants are cleaned up. The federal Clean Air Act, established in 1970, is credited with cleaning up many US cities. ~ GUARDIAN

Inequality is recast as virtuous: a reward for utility and a generator of wealth, which trickles down to enrich everyone. Efforts to create a more equal society are both counterproductive and morally corrosive. The market ensures that everyone gets what they deserve.
We internalise and reproduce its creeds. The rich persuade themselves that they acquired their wealth through merit, ignoring the advantages – such as education, inheritance and class – that may have helped to secure it. The poor begin to blame themselves for their failures, even when they can do little to change their circumstances.
Never mind structural unemployment: if you don’t have a job it’s because you are unenterprising. Never mind the impossible costs of housing: if your credit card is maxed out, you’re feckless and improvident. Never mind that your children no longer have a school playing field: if they get fat, it’s your fault. In a world governed by competition, those who fall behind become defined and self-defined as losers. Among the results, as Paul Verhaeghe documents in his book What About Me? are epidemics of self-harm, eating disorders, depression, loneliness, performance anxiety and social phobia. Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Britain, in which neoliberal ideology has been most rigorously applied, is the loneliness capital of Europe. We are all neoliberals now. The term neoliberalism was coined at a meeting in Paris in 1938. Among the delegates were two men who came to define the ideology, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek. Both exiles from Austria, they saw social democracy, exemplified by Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and the gradual development of Britain’s welfare state, as manifestations of a collectivism that occupied the same spectrum as nazism and communism. In The Road to Serfdom, published in 1944, Hayek argued that government planning, by crushing individualism, would lead inexorably to totalitarian control. LOOK AT THIS ( $1.4 TRILLION ) NEOCON REPUBLICAN PUKES HIDE FOR TAX CHEATS!
US corporate giants such as Apple, Walmar& General Electric have stashed $1.4 TRILLION DOLLARS (£980bn) in tax havens, despite receiving trillions of dollars in taxpayer support, according to a report by anti-poverty charity Oxfam.
The sum, larger than the economic output of Russia, South Korea &. Spain, is held in an opaque & secretive network of 1,608 subsidiaries based offshore, said Oxfam.
The charity’s analysis of the financial affairs of the 50 biggest US corporations comes amid intense scrutiny of tax havens following the leak of the Panama Papers.
And the charity said its report, entitled Broken at the Top was a further illustration of “massive systematic abuse” of the global tax system.
Technology giant Apple, the world’s second biggest company, topped Oxfam’s league table, with some $181bn held offshore in three subsidiaries.
Boston-based conglomerate General Electric, which Oxfam said has received $28 BILLION in taxpayer backing, was second with $119 BILLION.stored in 118 tax haven subsidiaries. GE POLLUTED HUDSON RIV
ER WITH PCB's! Computing firm Microsoft was third with $108. BILLION, in a top 10 that also included pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer, Google’s parent company Alphabet & Exxon Mobil, the largest oil company not owned by an oil-producing state.
Oxfam contrasted the $1.4 TRILLION held offshore with the $1 TRILLION paid in tax by the top 50 US firms between 2008 & 2014.
It pointed out that the companies had also enjoyed a combined $11.2 TRILLON in federal loans, bailouts & loan guarantees during the same period.
Overall, the use of tax havens allowed the US firms to reduce their effective tax rate on $4 TRILION of profits from the US headline rate of 35% to an average of 26.5% between 2008 and 2014. The charity said this had helped firms spend billions on an army of lobbyists for TAX CHEATS. ~ Guardian

  • There is a worrying discrepancy in the lifespans of rich and poor Americans, but the gap is lower in cities with stronger government services
Whether it’s conservatives deriding the “nanny state”, former president Bill Clinton declaring the era of “big government” to be over, or Ted Cruz attacking “New York values”, big government seems to be perpetually under attack.
But what if the fight over “big government” simply comes down to how much you value a human life?
That is the implication of a groundbreaking study from the Health Inequality Project on the impacts of inequality in the United States. The study’s authors reviewed years of tax earnings and social security death records, and came to two notable conclusions.
First, the bad news, considering our widening income gap: the rich live longer than the poor. In the early 1980s, the top 10% of earners lived 2.8 years longer than the bottom 10%. By the 1990s, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, that gap had grown to 4.5 years. This latest study found that the richest American men – the top 1% – live 15 years longer than the men in the bottom 1%, while for women the divide is a decade. In other words, extreme income inequality doesn’t just hamper economic growth, lead to wealth being hoarded rather than circulated healthily through the economy, and promote a banking sector devoted to gambling instead of job creation. Extreme inequality also kills people.
Now, the good news: those big-government policies that Republicans – and even some Democrats – love to condemn might actually save lives.
The same study found that the gap in lifespan varied not only based on income, but also location. Poor Americans in liberal enclaves such as New York City and San Francisco lived longer than those in cities such as Dallas and Detroit, a surprising statistic which the study’s authors chalk up to social spending and public health policies in those areas.

  • NO decision we make as Americans more dramatically affects the direction of our country than our choice for president. He or she is more than the manager of the executive branch, commander in chief or appointer of judges. The president reflects, but also helps define, our national values, priorities and direction.
After considering the biggest challenges facing our nation and the future I want for my children and our country, I have decided to become the first member of the Senate to support my colleague Bernie Sanders for president.
I grew up in working-class Oregon. On a single income, my parents could buy a home, take a vacation and help pay for college. My father worked with his hands as a millwright and built a middle-class life for us.
My parents believed in education and they believed in the United States. When I was young, my father took me to the grade school and told me that if I went through those doors, and worked hard, I could do just about anything because we lived in America. My dad was right.
Years later, my family and I still live in the same working-class community I grew up in. But America has gone off track, and the outlook for the kids growing up there is a lot gloomier today than 40 years ago.
Many middle-class Americans are working longer for less income than decades ago, even while big-ticket expenses like housing, health care and college have relentlessly pushed higher.
It is not that America is less wealthy than 40 years ago — quite the contrary. The problem is that our economy, both by accident and design, has become rigged to make a fortunate few very well off while leaving most Americans struggling to keep up.
And as economic power has become more concentrated, so too has political power. Special interests, aided by their political and judicial allies, have exercised an ever-tighter grip on our political system, from the rise of unlimited, secret campaign spending to a voter suppression movement. Under President Obama’s leadership.

Stop huge amounts of ocean pollution without even leaving home. Ocean protection begins on land – especially as much of the ocean pollution comes from there too. We dump more garbage into the ocean, than the tonnage of fish we take out. We can choose to stop doing that & that will be one less pollutant choking our seas we eat microscopic waste from. Oil spills often come to mind when thinking about ocean pollution. In addition to the short-term impacts, severe long-term problems can also result. The Exxon Valdez, ran aground in Alaska in 1989, but the damage to marine life & waters of Prince William Sound can still be seen today. The Prestige oil tanker, which sank off the Spanish coast in 2002, was an environmental & economic disaster - destroying the local fishing industry & massively affecting local tourism after polluting more than 100 beaches in France & Spain. Ever voyaged sailing there on a sailboat? There's 3 seas NOW with huge plastic garbage vortexes! But oil spills at sea only account for just a fraction of the pollution problem. Domestic sewage; industrial discharges; leakages from waste tips; urban & industrial run-off, oil accidents, spillage & explosions; sea dumping operations; oil production; mining; agriculture nutrients & pesticides; waste heat sources; & radioactive discharges are all sources of marine pollution. These land-based sources account for around 44% of all the pollutants in the oceans, while atmospheric toxins add an additional 33%. Ironically, only 12% of ocean pollution comes from activities at sea! In most cases, it is literally in our hands to prevent ocean pollution!! CREEPING DEAD ZONES are created by pollution from sewage discharge, agriculture & industrial pollution which stimulate blooms of algae in coastal waters. As these blooms die & decay they use up all the oxygen in the water, leaving it unable to support any living thing. NASA coined that phrase, from watching the areas across the ocean die from space! The Tax Justice Network estimates the global elite are sitting on $21–32 TRILLION DOLLARS of untaxed assets. Clearly, only a portion of that is owed to the US or any other nation in taxes – the highest tax bracket in the US is 39.6% of income. But consider that a small universal income of $2,000 a year to every adult in the US – enough to keep some people from missing a mortgage payment or skimping on food or medicine – would cost only around $563bn each year. A larger income, to ensure that no American fell into absolute abject poverty – say, $12,000 a year – would cost around $3.6tn. That is a big number, but one that once again seems far more reasonable when considered through the lens of the Panama Papers and the scandal of global tax evasion. Because the truth is that we have all been robbed, systematically, by the world’s wealthiest people, for decades. They have used those stolen dollars to build yet more wealth for themselves, and all the while we have been arguing with ourselves over what to do with the leftover pennies. Enough. We have the money to solve our problems. The first step is to stop the global elite from hoarding and hiding it. Cracking down on tax evasion alone will not fund all our priorities, but the Panama Papers do put the lie to the politics of austerity. A universal basic income would go a long way towards ensuring all Americans can have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as promised way back in 1776. Some may disagree with the notion of an unconditional cash grant, or object to it going to everyone. Just don’t say we can’t afford it.

  • If the super-rich actually paid what they owe in taxes, the US would have loads more money available for public services
We should all be able to agree: no one should be poor in a nation as wealthy as the US. Yet nearly 15% of Americans live below the poverty line. Perhaps one of the best solutions is also one of the oldest and simplest ideas: everyone should be guaranteed a small income, free from conditions.
Called a universal basic income by supporters, the idea has has attracted support throughout American history, from Thomas Paine to Martin Luther King Jr. But it has also faced unending criticism for one particular reason: the advocates of “austerity” say we simply can’t afford it – or any other dramatic spending on social security. If you're rich, you can avoid paying taxes. That's got to change.
That argument dissolved this week with the release of the Panama Papers, which reveal the elaborate methods used by the wealthy to avoid paying back the societies that helped them to gain their wealth in the first place. Roads and transportation infrastructure. Educated workforces. Courts and legal systems. Innovations sparked by government funding, such as the internet. No one – no matter how smart or hard working – joins the American or global elite without making use of these shared resources. But while working and middle-class families pay their taxes or face consequences, the Panama Papers remind us that the worst of the 1% have, for years, essentially been stealing access to Americans’ common birthright, and to the benefits of our shared endeavors. Worse, many of those same global elite have argued that we cannot afford to provide education, healthcare or a basic standard of living for all, much less eradicate poverty or dramatically enhance the social safety net by guaranteeing every American a subsistence-level income.
