Still stunned about Hank Johnson vid

I know....right? When I saw that I about peed my pants laughing and then like you say, got concerned for our future...crazy stuff happens with our Govt.....check out how much money Jesse Jackson's son collected in ya go...even scarier....

Convicted Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) is scheduled to receive $8,700 per month in government disability pay, as well as a partial federal pension of $45,000. That generous $8,700 in disability comes thanks to Jackson's sudden development of a "mood disorder" as the federal government began looking to indict him.

Jackson, who was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, had no history of mental illness during his prior 17 years in Congress. Rev. Jesse Jackson has defended his son's claims of mental illness, stating to the court, "This time a year ago I thought we may have lost him."

So, Jesse Jackson, Jr. 17-year veteran of the US Congress, suddenly gets a "mood disorder"(about the same time he learned he was to be indicted) and is going to prison for 2.5 years. Because his "mood disorder" was so severe, he has become disabled and will receive $8700 per month as a disability payment as well as $45000 a year from his congressional pension, a total of about $150K per year. Is this a great country or what?

My mood is disordered too...where is my check? tax dollars hard at work....

VERY good an artist and designer I understand your points about creativity driving innovation...I constantly compete with new designers coming fresh out of school head hunting my forces me to re-invent myself constantly but I like it, keeps me sharp and fresh...patent reform would have the same effect of creating complacency and going with the status quo because you may be a genius but you won't be rewarded for it when everybody just uses your design...

Obama care...I shoulda got THAT contract to design their website...60+ million dollars for something that doesn't work any better than the system it represents but I digress...that's another message

I really hate to say this as a Veteran and proud American but it wasn't a the video...I was SHOCKED that my tax dollars pay this guys massive salary and benefits for life and he thinks that an island will capsize from overpopulation....unbelievable...

If this congressman would have hired me.... I could charge the govt. millions of dollars to plan the barracks layouts for the Marines so that half are on one side of the island, and the other half are on the other side so everything "balances out"....then I will put a wall up down the middle to make sure that the East Guamans don't cross over into West Guaman's side and risk capsizing the island....

Thanks for your response centurycom....good points....
What is your take on Apple wanting out of Rockstar? From what I've read it's like Rockstar may very well dissolve...the "community" (more than likely all of the serial infringers) are working desperately to push the "why can't we all just get along and progress together as an industry" (Cisco said something like this to Rockstar) agenda and of course there are a fair amount of people who scream "patent trolls"...I don't believe SPEX are patent trolls and in fact are helping to save pensions for Nortel employees (very noble indeed) but I look at the other sideline to see what I'm up against....

Here is a short list of my concerns about investing in SPEX based on what I've seen since June:

    - HUGE upside
    - Ongoing royalties / licensing deals
    - Helping Nortel employees
    - Massive addressable market even if they are conservative

    - We are kept in the dark about case details...(Fugitive helps with this)
    - Serious volatility with little to no catalysts to explain it
    - Possible dilution (this really doesn't bother me too much unless it keeps re-occurring due to lost cases)
    - Morons in Washington DC decide to pass patent legislation reform (google Hank Johnson, a congressman who debated with Navy's Pacific Commander, Adm. Robert Willard at a hearing about sending more Marines to's a transcript....

JOHNSON: It's a small island, about 24 miles if, I recall, long?... About seven miles wide at the least widest on the island... I don't know how many square miles that is; do you happen to know?

WILLARD: I don't have that figure, sir. I could certainly supply it to you if you'd like.

JOHNSON: My fear is that, uh, that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and, uh, capsize. (tilts hands to demonstrate how an island might capsize)

WILLARD: (trying to suppress a smile): We don't anticipate that...

    check out the's pretty funny...GLTA

What's Up Kaiser...the IR is Brett Maas from Hayden IR...yes they are their own company but act as a direct line to CEO Hayes...after emailing him concerns in the past he responded with copy and paste answers from Anthony in an email..specifically this is how I know that Markman hearings give judges 60 days to respond and he also stated that settlements at Markman hearings are VERY rare but possible which is why if most of the investors realized this we wouldn't see the spikes before Markmans like we do...think about it, if you were the defendant would you be in a big hurry to ink a settlement deal at the Markman knowing the judge may take 60 days even if you knew it was bad for you...I wouldn't...

Yes SPEX has been around for 60 years but they are essentially brand new to IP litigation...if you look at the top of Market Pulse it says "Medical Laboratories & Research"....

Let's face it....these guys are lawyers...they are very savvy at manipulating circumstances to fit their agendas...they are GOOD lawyers so therefore the BEST at spinning things and we are just along for the ride of a high stakes game...what I want to know is at what point is it just too hard to read the tea leaves and we become vulnerable to the downside risk...upside potential is great but these legal matters could take YEARS and all it would take is for the Govt. to shut down the whole operation of IP litigation and this will all be for naught...the lack of information we are able to obtain (thanks to fugitive for his input, a light in a dark tunnel) and the secrecy of litigation is to me the hardest part of holding on to this and it seems that we are all waiting for the surprise ending of each movie (lawsuit)...will we live or will they chop us into little financial pieces...

  • swihart_art swihart_art Dec 13, 2014 5:02 PM Flag

I'm just curious as to why you believe they will be releasing news by end of year...they can't make news up and can't release info on AT&T due to NDA and IF they got payment of any amount from AT&T it MAY show up in the next 10Q...if it doesn't then either they are still negotiating amounts or worse case scenario it was dismissed and not good for us...

I am not bashing just looking at things in a very realistic light...I've been long since June...

Who knows when the judge will rule on the Markman hearing, she has until the 21st of January, and even when she does, from my understanding, it does not indicate the actual outcome of a trial, simply her opinion of what a jury would rule and how terms are defined to the jury...sure she may say to Vtech and Uniden that she believes that they should settle based on what she heard but that does not guarantee that they will settle (they do have a track record for settling though) and not fight it or just try to stall for as long as they can...if they do decide to settle, how long would that take for negotiations on average and if they do, will we get to know for how much or is it the same as AT&T?...

I'm not worried about dilution at all, the price swings we see (10% swings are the norm here) are about the same IMO and adding 5 million shares won't sting that bad IMO...I've already hung in after the last slam at $2...

Another thing that has been on my mind is where is the money from the CompuFill licensing announcement they made early this year?... I've asked this question a few times to IR in emails...Brett says he will ask about this but that was almost a month ago...

Once again, I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just not sure why the end of year timeframe is the prediction...

Good deal Fugitive... I have the same sentiment...when I chose SPEX as an investment, I looked at the big picture...if the courts rule against them they are ignoring the whole legalities of the patent system itself....if that happens I will never invest in a IP company only fear is that I have to wait 2 years to find out I'm wrong....

I use Scottrade as well Fugitive...there have been times when SPEX was spiking and I actually drove money orders to my local branch an hour away to get more shares before the day was out...they will take money orders immediately if you show up but you cannot give them orders or cashiers check is what gets it done... the only sad thing is one day I went and picked up 1,000 shares but that was at 1.69...I have averaged down to .90...still waiting and believe that this will be a big play but sometimes I's all up to the courts and of course this all takes time because of that...when other traders get impatient, we all suffer... just look at today....GLTA

Thanks for posting Fugitive....I can't believe that they (Vtech / Uniden) have an expert that actually tried to say that IE or any web browser for that matter (Firefox, Safari, Netscape (old school browser that hasn't been used in forever)) could not open local content on a computer....I'm a web designer and by no means an expert but fully understand this concept...every web page you visit downloads images, text, video etc. into a local cache (temp folder on your hard drive) so that if you re-visit the same content it doesn't need to re-download said content..... it simply loads it LOCALLY from your hard can open just about anything from jpegs to .mp4 to text in a browser without ever getting online...

Their experts are either that full of it or just plain incompetent, which I seriously doubt they can be THAT incompetent, to make our case a slam dunk....they must be grasping for straws...really bad move...

Here is what I'm really wondering....why are they talking about web browsers in a case concerning cordless phone technology? far as I know, cordless phone technology has nothing to do with internet unless there is more to this than we realize such as Vtech / Uniden planning to change that industry to support internet tech into their home phones like VOIP...

I've been watching the short interest daily here because as us longs here know...they will relentlessly short this at times...Monday and Tuesday were very low interest at 13% each day BUT yesterday showed a 28% interest...are they setting up a bull trap today....letting it trickle upward to sell short a bit higher the unleashing a bear raid to run it down...I'm sure shorts are nervous about shorting down here but a well coordinated bear raid could allow them to cover after the move and reduce risk drastically...not sayin' don't buy but it makes me wonder why the jump in short news is dangerous for SPEX at these turning / consolidation points...GLTA

I do have a margin account but don't use it...whatever my cash balance is what I'm willing to invest...I only switched from cash to margin when I found out that it limits how many trades I can Scottrade, with a cash account, if you buy and sell stocks before the order closing they call it a "free ride" and freeze your account...not good if you know that a stock you own is about to take a nose I switched to a margin and I can trade 3 "roundtrips" per day without any problems although I don't trade like a day trader I just want to have that option should it present itself...

I use Scottrade....$7 trades on stocks above 1.00...add 1% of transaction amount if below...I don't think that Scottrade will let you short a stock under $5 but I don't short stocks yet...still too new to trading to worry about that for now...either way I would be pretty jacked if I went to sell my shares and they weren't there too sell...GL with that...

Wow...I did not know that they could lend out shares that were owned by are you saying that if you wanted to sell your 10350 shares yesterday that you would not have been able to?....That's crazy if that's the case...I thought brokers lend out their own shares for shorting, not clients....

I got COMPLETELY SLAMMED when I bought near $4 and then it dropped near 3.50 by EOD late May and then they released press after hours that they were making an offering at $2....(I swear they have the worst timing for PR ever) what a hard lesson for a newer investor....I've averaged down to .96 since then and I recently sold a good portion of my position at 1.35...wish I would have sold at 1.50 or more but still I can get back in down here is hard being a SPEX investor with the massive price swings on little or no news and having the company give us nothing to hold on to makes it even harder...IMO this will pop someday but when?...who knows?...will we be allowed to know or will it be another "secret settlement" ....and now with talk about possible patent reform in 2015 it makes it even scarier...I'm thinking of buying chunks in the low 1.00's and .90's to reload...I didn't sell on the other spikes this year and learned my lesson and missed great opportunities to either bank cash or increase my and learn but I'm always vigilant when I'm out like right now to make sure it don't POP without me on board...I put buy orders in .10 higher than current SP with stop on quote orders to prevent it running away without me...GLTA

Thanks for the analysis...I have to say that I agree with SPEX's strategy if we understand this correctly...why be in a lump sum settlement to make Cisco's life easier and at the same time make all of these other companies fight over who gets what share of the settlement...we should (it appears we are) go after Cisco as an individual and either lose on our own or win on our own which makes the reward much greater and not divided...

Even if Nortel said to the industry..."Use our patents all you want as long as you work with us on building the internet..." IMO when they went bankrupt (they wouldn't have if they played their patents right IMO) anything they said or did means nothing to the guy (SPEX or Rockstar) who bought the patents from Nortel...

  • Watched "My Cousin Vinny" again last night and it never gets old...what if we had "Vinny" on the SPEX team?...these cases would be over in a matter of, it doesn't work that way in the real world...

Is CISCO saying that since they had correspondence via email with Spherix and Spherix never asked for licensing or royalties and did not mention that they were infringing that it makes it okay to use the tech and not pay?...If that's their defense then I think that CISCO is in trouble...
