Tiny Tim just isn't the man Jobs was, instead of fixing a mission critical component of apple's entire strategy, he goes off and buys a .... headphone maker for 3B? One of those #$%$ moments that tells you something is seriously wrong.

Very strategic purchases, my read on this, they're not only building out Here maps as an alternative to Google's but also reinforcing their mapping IP to go after Googlemaps,directly... which means a general push against Android IP infringers may be very close indeed.

Nokia's Mapping Patents Predate The Existence Of Google Itself

This could be a rather difficult fight for Google. Nokia is starting to flex its patent muscles in the mapping arena. And at least some of its patents predate the existence of Google itself, meaning that Google is going to find it difficult to claim priority. The big question will be not about this first case though: it’ll be about what Nokia has in reserve for later on:

“The patent Nokia is asserting in that German lawsuit is EP0766811 on an “electronic navigation system and method”. The patent has a June 1994 priority date, proving that Nokia was working on mapping and navigation software years before Google was even founded.

Claim 1 covers the following basic concept:

    1. A method of transmitting route directions in a compact form, comprising the steps of:

    (a) generating a first set of maneuver arms for providing a graphical representation of a calculated route to be taken by a vehicle through an intersection and geometric representations of a plurality of segments of roads to be traveled about an intersection along the route, wherein the intersection is an origin, and said representations of each of said plurality of segments of roads starts at the origin and radiates outward to an endpoint Xi, Yi to approximate the angles at which the roads approach the intersection, to depict a first intersection on a display, each maneuver arm of the first set of maneuver arms being represented by at least one endpoint;

There’s more at Florian Mueller’s of course.

That does indeed look like they’re claiming a patent over the electronic method of providing directions from stored maps. And assuming that the patent is valid that would put rathe

Ainoastaan Googlen hakukone antaa sille etua markkinassa.

Siilasmaa esitti myös tulevaisuuden visioitaan itse ohjautuvista älyautoista, joiden teknologiaan Nokia on jo investoinut paljon. Siellä Herellä hänen mukaansa hyvät asetelmat.

”Nokia on karttapalveluiden Sveitsi”, Siilasmaa hehkutti.

Verkkoliiketoiminnan kasvunäkymä puolestaan ei ole niin lupaava.

”Verkkoliiketoiminta on kasvun näkökulmasta haastavin. Siinä markkinakasvu on alhainen”, Siilasmaa totesi.

Siilasmaa sanoi, että tulevaisuudessa yhä suurempi osa Nokian tuottamasta lisäarvosta perustuu ohjelmisto-osaamiseen.

    Uusi Nokia

Palaset loksahtivat paikoilleen”, Siilasmaa kertoi.

what was their reason for the downgrade? was it the 3b in cash burning or clients afraid of ALU going Bk? or perhaps it's that new French law preventing anyone from buying alu...or maybe the French unions preventing anyone from restructuring?

he knows perfectly well that the indian sub and nokia finland are two separate companies, he knows too about limited liability, and about the existence of the india finland anti-double taxation treaty...before which this tax issue is headed for international arbitration and with likelihood of a nokia victory...he also knows india new government is planning to turn back the 'terrorist tax' regime of the old administration...that's in bjp's own words...

but as he is a paid basher, there's no point talking to him..he's just a bashing robot

The Nokia (NOK) patent portfolio leads the mobile technology industry in both quantity and quality of patents. The recent licensing agreement ordering Apple (AAPL) to pay Nokia a royalty fee for each iPhone sold proves the profit potential of this patent portfolio. Given that the Google (GOOG) based Android operating system is essentially a copy of the Apple operating system, it is fairly certain that all "Google " based Android devices may infringe on the same Nokia patents as the iPhone and other Apple products, thus it appears only a matter of time before the royalties from these devices start to add up for Nokia. (This is according to award winning intellectual property analyst Florian Mueller, in a blog post following the Apple Nokia Settlement).

Since Nokia holds the most patents relating to the cutting-edge 4G/LTE technology, it is very plausible to assume that these total patent royalties will come to rival those of Microsoft (MSFT), holder of the most patents related to the traditional 2G/3G technology which allows them to receive royalties on a staggering 50% of all Android devices sold. In total, these Android based royalties alone are estimated to net Microsoft upwards of $3.2 billion per year. As technology progresses and more internet usage moves to mobile devices, it is my opinion that Nokia could garner double or triple this amount in the not so distant future.

The wide-ranging patent infringement suit against leading Android manufacturer HTC (along with RIM and View-sonic) was announced in a Nokia press release on May, 1 2012; and the huge discrepancy between the robust Apple patent portfolio (which Nokia already defeated) and the very weak HTC portfolio was succinctly stated by IP analyst Florian Mueller on his blog FOSSPATENTS, "(In their patent battle) Apple brings heavy patent artillery, (while HTC only brings) guerrilla warfare." The overall lack of quality patents within the HTC portfolio coupled with the 2010 cross-licensing agr
