Well I'm not worried about bankruptcy, and I'm buying all I can at 15%+ yields.

I understand your situation completely. I bought back into to BBEP the past few days, but as a safeguard I am also buying equal amounts of the preferred, BBEPP, which still pays a highly respectable 16% currently, with a call price of $25 in May 2019. You might want to look into this assuming your margin expense is in the 6-7% range.

My Aroon indicators show it's time to add some more ORC now...Aroon up is at 96 (anytime it's gone up that far it#$%$ 100), and Aroon down is at 40, indicating an uptrend could be starting. Adding some more of this and some more UTG tomorrow. Keeping an eye on FSC, but it's chart is a little crazy right now, but could be a buy soon.

Adding more UTG tomorrow. Aroon up hit 100 today, and Aroon down is dropping fast, currently at 44. Start of an uptrend again possibly.

Keeping a close eye on this one. 2 of my 3 buy indicators have already been met, and he third one, the Aroon down line, is vey close. Need it to go below 50 and I will take a position. It stands at 52 now, so it could happen today or tomorrow.

Correction....I did NOT get out of PSEC this week...it was AGNC that I sold.

  • theheckwithtech by theheckwithtech Aug 13, 2015 10:23 AM Flag

I took a small position today based on the weakness of the share price, but also because a technical indicator I am using to determine my buy/sell points hit the mark today. Aroon Up is at 96, and Aroon down just went below 50 today which is a sign of a trend reversal. Bought at 28.30 and put a stop in at 26.88. Will be keeping a close eye on it to possibly add more if it the Aroon down falls below 30.

CPTA = Aroon Down is at 100, Aroon up is at 4. I would not even consider buying it at the moment.

In theory you would be correct, but remember, they have ulterior motives, which is to milk money from the little guys by getting in earlier, and getting out sooner. The T/A I'm using shows where the money is really going, not where the hot air is heading....

Again, using my Aroon indicators, I got out today at 19.81. We can compare notes on buying back in using your parameters vs. the Aroon charts and see how they jive as time goes on if you don't mind.

I have never, ever been a technical analysis guy either, not once. But I've been using this Aroon method (one year chart, 25 day parameters) strictly to determine a buy/sell point, not as a crutch to avoid any real research on a company. So thus far, using it to buy AGNC, it's working (up almost 3% in a few weeks), it's working. Still way too early to tell, but I did use it today to buy back into HRZN after being out for more than a year. I'll keep you posted how it goes.

Yes. Holding ORC, ARR, MORL, and just added to AGNC again. Sold my OAKS this week and moving those funds into HRZN.

wisejam...good to see you again...hope you're doing well. FSC is in an interesting position and I'm keeping a close eye on it possibly to enter a new position again. The Aroon chart I use shows both the up and down lines above 70, which means a trend is developing, but hasn't been clarified yet. If the Aroon down goes below 70 (it's at 88 today), and the Aroon up line stays above 70 (it's at 96 currently), that will signal a buy for me.

I've been using this technical indicator simply to determine my buy/sell points, and it has thus far been working well, although I've only been testing it on a small scale with AGNC and some other ETF's.

I got out of OAKS this week, and though the indicators weren't quite there, I took a small position in HRZN today, and when and if the Aroon lines cross, I will add again. Looking at PSEC, the T/A part of my parameters say it's a very bad buy right now. But I do check it daily, and will let you know if that changes, since I own a little PSEC. My indicators told me it was time to sell on July 17th at $7.43, but I ignored it because I had been stopped out of a bunch of MLP's and didn't want to lose anymore income.

I got out of both PSEC and OAKS this week, and have diverted those funds towards HRZN. I'm also keeping an eye on FSC again after leaving it last year. Management did show some small token willingness to increase shareholder value, but it's not at a buy point yet.

  • theheckwithtech by theheckwithtech Aug 12, 2015 12:52 PM Flag

It's frustrating when you have securities like this where info is leaked ahead of time, and the common shareholder sits back and goes #$%$ just happened?" Nevertheless, what I do know is that it's useless to fight the momentum, and using an additional T/A indicator to trigger my buy and sell points (and hence keep my emotion out of the mix), I had to let OAKS go. Everything points to a decrease in the dividend, and yet another series of share price slides along with it.

Just wanted to say buy to y'all.....and I'm currently reinvesting my proceeds from OAKS into HRZN. Took a small position today and will add more once certain indicators are triggered. Good luck to you all.

I've been out of HRZN since March 2014, patiently waiting for the parameters to line up again to re-enter. They aren't quite there, but based on the yield and a specific technical analysis that I now employ to signal my entry points, I felt comfortable taking a partial position today, because the T/A I use can often lead you to be a day or two behind in a quick runup. Once the Aroon down line crosses below 50 (it's at 60 today), and provided the Aroon up line continues it's upward trajectory, I'll add another block to my position as well. So blah blah blah....hello again HRZN investors, lol.

I am familiar with CO Wealth....so I will propose a Q for you to ponder...what if his goal is to accumulate as many shares as possible knowing the Fed will not be able to raise rates this year at all? Just something to think about.

Oh, and your questions about the changes to my investing criteria.....The bulk of them are simply parameters I have developed over the years of learning things the hard way mostly, but the most recent addition involves a substantial amount of backtesting I did using Aroon charting, with a 25 day parameter. I can't really go into all the details of how I use it since it would be too long, but you can google and find some basic info on it. I am using it strictly to determine buy/sell points, and may become a little more active in my trading, rather than just holding for infinity as I typically do. Like I said, I've done some extensive backtesting, which would have rendered positive capital gains returns in almost every stock I tested (Ironically, the only exceptions to the rule were REIT's), but as a whole, would have ended up positive. Starting out small and slow with AGNC, RDVY and NOBL. I'll probably need some refinements as it goes along, but keep an eye on AGNC, since that is the one, according to my parameters, is set to run higher from here.
