Northrop Grumman closing facility near Carson, 800 jobs affected
Northrop Grumman Corp. will close its Dominguez Hills facility near Carson as the military contractor works to cut costs and reduce facilities amid a constricted federal budget, the company said Monday.
The work at Dominguez Hills, which supports development and integration of the company's C4I command and control communications technology, will be moved to other Northrop facilities in phases starting this year.
Almost 800 workers, including engineers and scientists, will be affected by the move.
Northrop announced the planned closure as part of a larger reorganization.
"Consolidating these centers of excellence will improve our strategic alignment with our customers' need for increasingly innovative and affordable products, services and solutions," said Wes Bush, Northrop's chairman, CEO and president, in a statement.
"We continuously examine our operational capacity to determine how we can leverage it in the most efficient and cost-competitive manner. Given the current budget environment, it is imperative that we act to enhance future performance, innovation and affordability for our customers."
Rep. Janice Hahn, a Torrance Democrat, said she was saddened by news of the 768 jobs that will be moved "out of our community."
"These are good paying, high skill jobs, and while I am hopeful many of them will stay in our region, this is unmistakably bad news," Hahn said in a statement. "As we wind down a decade at war, we need to help transition our defense industry towards civilian applications - harness their innovation for peacetime uses and retain jobs."
The Dominguez Hills facility, built in 1987 by TRW Inc., became part of Northrop when the aerospace giant purchased TRW in 2002.
Also Monday, Northrop designated five "centers of design and integration excellence" that will support its Aerospace Systems sector's manned aircraft, unmanned systems and electronic attack businesses. Aerospace Systems is based in Redondo Beach.
The company said its Manned Aircraft Design Center of Excellence will be located in Melbourne, Fla., and will include aircraft design work currently being performed at the company's Bethpage, N.Y., facility.
Northrop's B-2, F/A-18 and F-35 programs will remain in Palmdale, El Segundo and Redondo Beach, respectively.
The Unmanned Systems Center of Excellence will be located at Northrop's Rancho Bernardo facility near San Diego.
An Electronic Attack Center of Excellence will be located in Bethpage, N.Y.
Palmdale was named as the location for one of two Aircraft Integration Centers of Excellence. The other is in St. Augustine, Fla.
