    Panera is a Super Sell

You hit the nail on the head. And is ordering really the problem if your assembly line simply cannot handle the orders? I think they have bought some time with investors. The whole electronic ordering might sound like they are fixing the issue.

I can understand their point, and now that they are addressing it only time will tell. But they have run out of excuses if the new ordering system does not improve the situation.

A big part of their customer base is the lunch crowd. They want to be "smart" fast food, but trendy casual as well. The problem is that you won't keep the lunch crowd if you have punishing lines during the rush. I question how much they can actually serve during a lunch rush. So what if they get the orders, they still have to prep the food. Which to me seems the choke point.

It took me 10 mins to get a sandwich when there was no lines or crowd.

I don't see where the new ordering system will improve anything. But management has no excuses.

You might want to read the reviews for locations around the country.. pick a metro area and start averaging the ratings.. not the fluffy love story you are hoping for from the masses.

I checked on Yelp, and the average for reviews for the Philly area is less than 4 stars. There could be a large difference in quality between company vs non-company owned locations. But the bottom line is that it basically overpriced fast food. And the same store sales and pathetic sales growth is the only review investors need to worry about. Of course the stock buybacks might prop it up for a while, but in the end there are problems.

It is obvious by the lack of meat in my sandwich that they are clearly cutting costs, and consumers paying a premium do notice that sort of thing.

For us it was not just the grilled cheese, it was the overall value of the food. My turkey didn't have enough meat to fill the bread. Though I will say the location we visited didn't even grill the sandwiches correctly.
But I can see why they have issues with same store sales. And why they are trying to prop up the stock with a buyback.

If any other chain served that food

I can contrast the experience with Cheesecake Factory... Got lunch last Saturday and got the soup, salad, sandwhich special for under 10.00 without tip. And was great. not a single complaint.. Well one. the waitress was way too perky.

Panera is not offering it as kid's food, and the government cheese they serve in schools is more flavorful.

That is my point. I believe they are not above the fast food segment in food quality. I think Chipolte does at least provide quality and freshness. Arby's does a better job with its food. But I will stick to the sit down lunch at any number of higher end places that are not chains.

  • My first visit to Panera and my wife's second. She got a grilled cheese that had zero flavor. I got a smoked turkey that was not terrible, but lacking on meat. Since it was a panini they did a half assed job at pressing and toasting it.

In the end it was overpriced for poorly prepared food. Had McDonalds or Arby's offered the same thing would hipsters be so forgiving and continue to hang out and be cool? Arby's market fresh stuff is way better than panera and cheaper.
