I'm also of the opinion that United is not fully appreciating its competitive issues...
    .
.....* Delta is expanding in SEA to increase its Asian traffic. It's a shorter haul from SEA vs United's SFO.
.....* ORD is notorious for delays. Now they've packed CLE traffic in there; it will only get worse.
.....* Southwest is cherry-picking some of UAL's routes, chipping at their higher margin fares.
.....* Frontier is making inroads into CLE now that UAL has dumped it as a hub; fares to FL have dropped.
    .
I'm not the airline guy as far as stocks go, but I have flown an awful lot in my lifetime. My take from personal experience is United is near or at the bottom in most, if not all, major categories (on-time service, etc.). I just don't see how they can keep operating like this without expecting either a customer backlash, a competitive response, or a combination of both. Personally, I think Jeff Smisek is in over his head with this and maybe it's time to get a CEO in there who can better steer the ship. How I wish Gordie could come back...

roustyboy - last 3 years I was PLATINUM. Right now I'm GOLD. Total miles traveled - 1.2 MILLION. I AM the echelon they want to reach. And I'm fed up. Just think of how most other business travelers feel. Oh, and I see the stock has been tanking for a few days. More than just oil and sentiment. I think analysts are finally figuring out that those of us who fly a lot are cutting back. It's just not worth it any longer.

  • Dear United,

My hat's off to you. Just when I thought you couldn't come up with yet another way to make the flying experience suck, you come through in spades! Yesterday I cut my United credit card and mailed it back to you. I have around 60K miles I am using up in the next month, and then my relationship with your organization shall come to an end. It's bad enough what's going on with flying these days, but United seems to be the leader in doing everything they can to anger and alienate their customers. Goodbye!

  • From what I can tell, and by no means am I an expert on the airline industry, the "legacy" airlines, including United, are enjoying what I consider to be a "free ride". There truly is limited to no competition at the majority of major airports these days. This will last for the next 3 to 5 years. Competition will regain footing in some markets, and it will change again. For now, it sucks to fly, and will continue to do so for quite some time. However, when (not if, but when) the competition sinks in, flyers will enjoy a decade or more of low fares and competition.

This means that the airline stocks will do well for the next year or two. After that, look out below. When you see Jeff Smisek run for the exits (and he will at some point), that's when you know it's time to cash out.

  • UAL is insane. 2000+ flights a day and climbing at ORD. Look what happens when one small stinky fart comes along - it shuts the whole thing down. Why on earth do the airlines want to pack their hubs so tightly? Don't give me that "it's cheaper because they need less support personnel" argument - look at all the money they've LOST due to excessive cancellations, etc. Makes me wonder if anyone has really studied this problem. I think they'll find that SWA has them beat. And if you notice, SWA has the most problems at - you guessed it - they're highest concentration airports like MDW!
