It's usually because they got sucked in much, much higher - and since so many retail traders don't know when to cut their losses and sell, they are stuck in a way too large losing position. Posting and commiserating with other over-invested investors with bullish posts helps alleviate the pain (a little). It's the "hopium" addiction. :)

Untrue. I've been shorting significant sizes of NQ repeatedly, and have had no problems. Furthermore, the one public place you can check (IB), shows 550K shares available to short at that brokerage alone.
At the time you posted this, 171 shares had been traded AH. As of right now 20,371 have been traded so far AH.
