The suffocation deaths of two children prompted the recall on Friday of more than 2 million beanbag chairs, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The recalled beanbag chairs have zippers that can be opened, the CPSC said, allowing children to crawl inside. They are made by Ace Bayou Corp. The industry standard is to have beanbag chairs remain closed and have any zippers disabled.
One of the victims was a teenager, a 13-year-old McKinney, Texas, boy. The other victim was a 3-year-old girl from Lexington, Ky. Both were found inside of chairs, the CPSC said
Once a child crawls inside, they can get stuck and either suffocate or choke on the foam beads that fill the chairs.
The recalled chairs were sold for $30 to $100 prior to July 2013 at Walmart, Bon-Ton, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair, and Amazon.
Ace Bayou's beanbag chairs were sold in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They should have a tag sewn into the chair's seam that says "ACE BAYOU CORP." The chairs were made in China.
If you have an Ace Bayou beanbag chair, you are urged to check it to see if there are any zippers that can open.
If so, take them away from children and contact Ace Bayou. You will be provided with a free kit that will allow you to permanently disable the zippers.
