  • If fuel cells power plants catch on, and why not, then this is the stock to be in.

Both oil and fertilizer need a strong global economy to keep demand strong. But fertilizer is more weather dependent. A crop failure would consume more fertilizer in the next planting season as farmers respond to resulting higher prices.

Oil prices fell because of production overcapacity. There might be overcapacity in fertilizer.

30% of US corn goes into making ethanol. Biofuel makers say reducing ethanol blending requirements will kill jobs and hurt farmers who produce corn that is made into ethanol.

There is the Standard Version and there is the Latest Iteration of the Xchange 30. The latest iteration was announced in the Sept 29 press release, as having an ability to clamp thicker tissue. How much thicker, it didn't say, and it is this latest iteration that is being withdrawn from the market, because, I speculate, surgeons didn't like its performance. After all, they are not withdrawing the standard version. If there were no problems with performance, why withdraw it? Maybe under pressure from Broadfin, Cardica hastily pushed this latest iteration out the door without sufficient testing. Also, I think it was a mistake for Cardica to have used the standard color coding for tissue thickness on their cartridges, because when surgeons see a blue cartridge they will use it on tissue thickness that a much slimmer Xchange 30 can't handle. That is why Cardica has had to bend itself into a pretzel to increase tissue thickness.

  • Early in 2014 Q1 (February 8) Nanosphere's CEO, Bill Moffitt left the company for unknown reasons. Was he ousted? In that very same Q1, Broadfin bought 1 million shares of Nanosphere when it was trading above $2. In Q3, Broadfin then turned around and liqudated its entire Nanosphere position. During that Q3, Nanosphere traded between $1.80 and 50¢. Goes to show that replacing a CEO is not the cure all elixir. Cardica just added Bill Moffitt to its board of directors. With today's 25% hit in Cardica, Broadfin is tasting more losses.

Feb 08, 2014: Nanosphere's CEO Bill Moffitt leaves company.
May 15, 2014: Broadfin's 13-F filing shows it acquired 1 million shares Nanosphere during Q1
Aug 07, 2014: Nanosphere stock drops 33% on earnings report
Sep 04, 2014: Nanosphere announces "review of strategic alternatives"
Nov 04, 2014: Bill Moffitt joined Cardica's board according to earnings release
Nov 14, 2014: Broadfin's 13-F filing shows it sold all its 1 million shares of Nanosphere during Q3
