    Solitary Confinement: Punished for Life

    by wareham2620 Aug 4, 2015 1:49 PM

    Well think about that .......................................................
ENTO, Calif. — Ending years of litigation, hunger strikes and contentious debate, California has agreed to move thousands of prison inmates out of solitary confinement.
A legal settlement announced Tuesday between the state and a core group of inmates held in isolation for a decade or more at Pelican Bay State Prison calls for the end of the use of solitary confinement to control prison gangs.

Instead, the state agreed to create small, high-security units that keep its most dangerous inmates in a group setting where they are entitled to many of the same privileges as other prisoners: contact visits, phone calls and educational and rehabilitation programs.

Corrections spokesman Jeffrey Callison said the state would be able to utilize space within existing prisons to relocate the inmates removed from solitary.

But the majority of the several thousand gang-associated prisoners who have been either kept in isolation a decade or more, or have gone at least two years without a major rule violation, are to be moved back to the general prison population.

Solitary confinement as it is run now, before the settlement, remains reserved for those who commit crimes while behind bars, with set sentences that can run no longer than five years, the maximum penalty for murder in prison, apart from criminal sentences imposed by a judge.

Lawyers for prisoners in the class-action case say the settlement sets the tone for similar changes elsewhere in the nation. "This is a dramatic step forward," said Jules Lobel, lead attorney in the case and head of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

The state prison guard union, which had unsuccessfully attempted to intervene in the case, was "concerned."

"In our view California will return to the prison environment of the '70s and '80s when inmate-on-inmate homicides were at the highest levels and staff were killed," Nichol Gomez-Pryde, spokeswoman for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, said Monday in anticipation of the settlement.

California once led the nation in the use of solitary confinement but that position is now held by Texas.

According to the corrections department, California currently has some 6,400 inmates in isolation units, a number that steadily shrank for two years as the state changed its criteria for behavior that is considered gang activity and began removing prisoners who no longer met those standards.

"Southern Company has been innovating around the full portfolio for decades," said Fanning. "And with the evolution of changing regulations and the technology revolution taking place in energy production, Southern Company and AGL Resources will be well-positioned to meet a future that needs more natural gas infrastructure for our customers' benefit."

When there was a need for new generation that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Southern Company system took the lead in developing two of the first new, zero-emission nuclear units in a generation.

As others discussed removing affordable and abundant coal from the nation's energy mix, the Southern Company system developed innovative technology to provide an environmentally responsible way forward for coal in America.

A natural extension of the company's commitment to finding real solutions for America's energy future is Southern Company's acquisition of AGL Resources to help address one of the key challenges facing natural gas – developing the infrastructure necessary to send the low-priced commodity to the areas where it is increasingly needed.

The addition of AGL Resources' network of natural gas assets and businesses will provide a broader, more robust platform for long-term success and increase opportunities to invest in future infrastructure and energy solutions.

IMHO I would point out that this company is not relying on coal alone for it's electric. Therefore , if coal goes to he!! this company will not .

The Southern Company, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a public electric utility company. It is involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity through coal, nuclear, oil and gas, and hydro resources in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. The company also constructs, acquires, owns, and manages generation assets, including renewable energy projects. As of December 31, 2014, it operated 33 hydroelectric generating stations, 33 fossil fuel generating stations, 3 nuclear generating stations, 13 combined cycle/cogeneration stations, 9 solar facilities, 1 biomass facility, and 1 landfill gas facility. The company also provides digital wireless communications services with various communication options, including push to talk, cellular service, text messaging, wireless Internet access, and wireless data; and wholesale fiber optic solutions to telecommunication providers in the Southeast. The Southern Company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

SO has estimated earnings that are heading up ,

    Everybody uses electric .

Dividends have been raised every year for over the last 10 years .

Paying around a 5% or better return on your investment sounds good to me .

As an investor and not a trader , SO looks like a safe place to park some money .

Well best of luck to all .

10 to 28 years in solitary confinement ?

Obama is for more lenient prisons sentences . But prison isn't being kept in a cage .Prison is more like a college campus . Confinement is a cage , and for years at a time . I couldn't do that to anyone .

I'm also a shareholder and mainly concerned with capital appreciation and the dividend income. However, I also know many of the guards belong in prison full time , as inmates . Many inmates are there for drugs and some still sell drugs in prison . How do most of the drugs get in there ? That's right , the guards .

Yes , many of the inmates belong in prison . But who belongs in confinement for 28 years . Also , they're placed in confinement for years without a real court of law . The Judge gives them years in prison , not confinement. Then the prison puts them in confinement for years . If those inmates were in general population , we would still get our dividends .

I'm not saying we don't need prisons . I'm saying holding people in a cage , confinement , for 28 years is wrong .

    Google

Lowell correctional institution, person put herself into protective custody from guards found dead.

    Or

Lowell correctional institution, 'Daddy,' womanizing assistant warden, fired from troubled prison .

    Or

Female Inmates in Prison Say Guards Forced Them Into Prostitution .

    Or

Guards bet on fights they set up with the inmates .

Both male and female prisoners are placed in confinement for false reasons . Officers often write false disciplinary reports . Why ? Because then can and they like the power . Also, if a guard bring in drugs to be sold by an inmate , then another inmate has drugs brought in by a visit . Well the guard locks up the competition . If the guards want sex or a fight to bet on . The inmate complies or end up in confinement with the lost of gain time .

  • We need prisons , as people can't just do as they please . However, on the other hand neither should the prisons do as they please .

Dr. Haney, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, interviewed 56 prisoners who had spent 10 to 28 years in solitary confinement in Pelican Bay’s security housing unit ......

Can we as stockholders end this type of cruel and usual punishment ?

No human or animal should be held in a cage year after year .

Insider shareholders just keep coming back to the Kinder Morgan (NYSE:KMI) well.

Not the literal well, mind you. Kinder Morgan is a natural gas pipeline transporter — not a driller. But whatever Kinder Morgan’s relation to hydrocarbons, company insiders seem to think it’s a great business to be in.

Last month, we told you about two 100,000-each purchases of Kinder Morgan stock by company founder Richard Kinder, and a smaller purchase by the company’s CEO. Last week, we learned that insiders are still scooping up stock for their own accounts. Specifically, on July 24, a pair of Form 4 filings with the SEC described purchases of:

    - 100,000 shares of Kinder Morgan stock, bought by company Chairman Richard D. Kinder on July 24 at an average purchase price of $34.97 per share. (100,000 share blocks appear to be his preferred way to invest in Kinder Morgan stock).

    - and 500,000 shares bought by director Fayez Sarofim on July 22, at an even higher price — $35.33.

Together, that’s more than $21 million worth of Kinder Morgan stock bought by insiders in just three days of trading.

What does it mean to you?
Should you be following their example? A month ago, we argued the negative, pointing out that the stock was trading “at 49 times earnings, but projected to grow those earnings at just over 4% annually over the next five years,” indicating severe overvaluation in the shares.

In the short-term, at least, that appears to have been the right call. Whereas last month, insiders were paying $39 and $40 a share for Kinder Morgan stock, 30-odd days later those same shares are selling for closer to $35, about a 12% drop — and the stock still isn’t cheap.

Hit by declining revenues and net income in Q2, Kinder Morgan’s lower price per share still leaves those shares selling for about 49 times earnings. Worse, analysts polled on Yahoo! Finance now predict earnings will continue to decline, rather than grow even slowly. Instead of the 4% annual growth rate predicted just one month ago, the consensus now calls for 8% average declines in earnings over the next five years.

Long story short, Kinder Morgan shares might still be attractive to income investors looking to reap the rich 5.5% dividend yield. But value investors, hoping to see those dividends improved by a rising stock price… might have to wait a long time to see that happen.

ATLANTA, July 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Company today announced a regular quarterly dividend of 54.25 cents per share on the company's common stock, payable Sept. 5, 2015, to shareholders of record as of Aug. 17, 2015. I think that fear factor may already be in the stock price here . Either way , I'm happy with the present dividend and I'm in now .

In Florida if you buy $10 or $20 worth of cocaine or a rock you're only a user . But they can put you in prison for 5 to 15 years .Depending if they want to charge you with possession , a 3rd degree felony punishable up to 5 years . Or purchasing , a 2nd degree felony punishable up to 15 years .

GEO also has drug programs .I think the Judges will sentence the users to programs instead of the longer prison sentences . Drug use is growing and the programs are a big business too .

Also , Obama opened the Mexican boarder . That will lead to more sex offenders than ever in the US.

In recent months, there seems to have been an explosion of reported child sexual assaults committed by Mexican nationals, in this country illegally.
    Examiner
The most troubling and telling reason behind the growing epidemic of child molestation at the hands of illegal aliens, may lie in the fact the age of sexual consent throughout the majority of Mexico is 12 years of age.

Article 261 of Mexico's Federal Criminal Code states: ”Whoever, without the purpose of reaching copulation, performs a sexual act on a person under 12 or on a person that has no capacity of understanding the meaning of the act or that for any reason cannot resist, or demands that the act is performed, will be punished with a term of 2 to 5 years in prison.”

In addition to Mexico City, the age of consent is 12 in the following Mexican state..........

Anyway , the Mexicans sexual habits won't change over night . Then our prisons will full up with sexual offenders . They can't help the way the were raised and we can't help but to love our children . I really don't like to see anyone in prison . But it is what it is .

MMP has been good to me over the years . Lets just hope that trampoline is still at the bottom . However , there are many dividend paying stocks out there . If you're looking for stocks that increased their dividends and paying out 5% or more . Here are a few to do some homework on . AROW , if you count the 2% stock split every year with their cash dividend , it pays over 5% with increased dividends . Also , SO , T , FUN , BP, all paying out over 5% with increased dividends . SPH pays well , but without the increased dividends . ARLP is a coal stock with increased dividends . They can't do away with coal over night . ARLP is at a low now and paying over 10% . Can't hurt to do some homework on it . Oh yes , KMI is paying just under 5% now .But KMI expects 10% annual growth in dividend 2015-2020 with significant excess coverage .

    Msteucek ,

Thanking you for the stocks , I'm adding them to my watch list now . However, I've just placed a check in the mail box to TD Ameritrade on Thursday 7/9/15 . As soon as my check clears I'm buying two Department of Correction stocks , CXW and GEO . They're both REIT's and paying over 6% and 7% now . I really don't like REIT's or prisons . But they look like a good investment to me . If I miss that boat . I'll look at my watch list and their earnings per share , estimated earnings per share , etc. Then pick out two other stocks to invest in . I was looking at STON , but it looks like a dead business to me .

To everyone's surprise, Obama collapsed onto his desk, head in his hands, visibly shaken, almost in tears.
Finally, he composed himself and asked, "Just how many is a Brazilian?"
This should come as no surprise to you , since he obviously has no understanding of billions or trillions either.
