The fact is that they use extremely conservative accounting practices, which means that they do not show in their income statement the huge increases of retained value created by the massive growth of cash flow , but they do show the costs, which creates the false impression that they are losing money, whereas they are adding value at an incredible rate.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

  • The author makes some manifestly INCORRECT statements. He claims the “Competition is increasing” and "Vivint Solar (NYSE:VSLR), Sungevity and NRG Home Solar also are growing rapidly and proving to be major threats to the company in the US residential segment.”

In fact SolarCity has INCREASED its residential market share from 25% to 39% over the last year. In the last quarter alone SolarCity’s share GREW it residential market share from being bigger than the next 50 competitors COMBINED to being BIGGER THAN THE NEXT 70 COMPETITORS COMBINED.

The authors claims ARE OBVIOUSLY UNTRUE when he says: "Solar installation is a service business with very little differentiation. This means there is hardly any difference between the installation services of different companies” SolarCity could not be making such remarkable gains in market share UNLESS IT HAD VERY SIGNIFICANT COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES.

The fact is that SolarCity is growing at 100% a year because it does enjoy significant competitive advantages.

The fact is that they use extremely conservative accounting practices, which means that they do not show in their income statement the huge increases of retained value created by the massive growth of cash flow , but they do show the costs, which creates the false impression that they are losing money, whereas they are adding value at an incredible rate.

In fact during the last year alone they added $3.0 billion of Nominal Contracted Payements and increased retained value by ~$1.4 billion more than doubling their total retained value to $2.6 billion,

$1.4 billion added retained value equates to 27% of they market cap of $5.07 billion.

This year they are guiding that they will again nearly double their MWs deployed from 502 MWs in 2014 to to 920-1000 MWs in 2015 - which means the they will also probably increase their retained value by another $2.6 - $2.7 billion

In other words their added retained value in 2015 equates to around 50% of their current market cap

    Sentiment: Strong Buy
