thanks for the effort/research. Now I will do a little research to see if Biolase, the firm that will resell the Stratasys printer, is a competitor of Manhattan Scientifics or perhaps a partner/supplier.

Can't find any evidence that Google has leased conduits from LVLT. Can you point it out to me?

  • Noticed today that Stratasys entered a reseller agreement with a medical laser device company that will sell SSYS's Objet printers into dental offices for onsite manufacturing of various implants. I have never seen a description or explanation of Sigma's patent for dental implants. Does anyone on this board know what the patent covers, and could the SSYS move into the dentist office be a good thing for Sigma?

I don't self-identify as a moron, but I will try to answer your question. Gayner mentioned the overall portfolio return himself in the cc and I believe it is in the press release. Markel invests in a greater percentage of equities than more traditional insurance companies, but it is still a low percentage of the overall portfolio. The vast majority of the portfolio is in very short duration bonds because the long term yields available don't justify the risk. He also said the shift of the alterra investment portfolio would happen over time, and the Alterra money would also allow Market Ventures to go after bigger companies. Not sure what your issue is with Gayner.

  • Good analysis of Softbank on Seeking Alpha site. But the author recommends investing through SFTBY, making no mention of SFTBF. And I cannot find the difference between the two tickers. Any ideas out there?
    Thanks in advance.

Mgmt, particularly Gayner, does come across on the cc as being contemptuous of the analysts. To paraphrase him, when he said things were going well, he then said, "we'll continue doing what we do, and you'll continue doing what you do" meaning the analysts, who I guess are not always fans or take a quarter to quarter view instead of gayner's preferred much longer horizon. that said, I don't know why you think Alterra is not working out. The underwriting ratio of 118% was explained adequately (acquisition costs and all reserves being put into first year, not having any other place to put them). I just keep looking at the Book Value growth, and it is enough to keep me in this for the long term.

    Sentiment: Buy

Monitise is the "hidden engine" for many financial institutions mobile banking platforms, and that is a large part of its market value. Don't think Apple would have any interest in that business. Might have interest in Monitise software, but I bet there are better software options for what Apple has in mind than Monitise. I own Monitise because its strategy of working behind the scenes with the Visas and money center banks of the world makes sense. And they seem to be a nimble company that adapts quickly to customer/consumer behavior, not driven by technology.
