2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible Debuts, Starts at $48,750

With the debut of the all-new 4 Series Coupe, it was only a matter of time before BMW dropped its top with a 4 Series Convertible. Though essentially the replacement to the outgoing 3 Series Convertible, the new model designation allows the 4 Series to grow in its own direction of style and luxury.

The model lineup starts with the 428i, fitted with BMW’s twin-power turbo 2.0-liter inline-4 making 240 horsepower. The uprated 435i will feature the venerable 3.0-liter twin-power turbo inline-6, good for 300 horsepower. Both engines send power through an 8-speed sport automatic transmission. Power will be sent to standard rear-wheel drive in both models, while the 428i receives the option of xDrive all-wheel drive. It is expected that the 435i will get the xDrive option soon as well. The 4 Series Convertible though will not get a manual transmission option. Alas.

The 4 Series Convertible features a longer wheelbase and wider track than the model it replaces. Styling cues are borrowed from the new 3 Series Sedan, but also feature elements, like the air inlets behind the front wheel arches.

The convertible top is a 3-piece hardtop unit. It can fold flat in 20 seconds at speeds up to 11 mph. For those of you who would like to drive top-down in the late fall or early spring, BMW now offers a heated air ventilation system for the seatback and neck areas, similar to the Mercedes-Benz AirScarf system.
