In response to criticism of rising soldier deaths due to the enemy's increasing usage of land mines in Afghanistan and Iraq, the DoD decided to deploy Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.

"The MRAP program under the DoD initiated within the Marine Corps, but has quickly spread to a joint program involving the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force and USSOCOM. Critics of the decision to deploy the more expensive MRAPs were quelled by the proponents of the program who pointed to saved lives and higher financial costs of providing benefits to families of downed soldiers without the added protection of MRAPs."
