This Veterans' Week, November 5 to 11, Canadians across the country will join together to show how they remember and honour our Veterans. As this important week starts Thursday, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, is encouraging all Canadians to think about how they will remember this Veterans' Week.

"We are reminded of the achievements and sacrifices of our Veterans every day. But during Veterans' Week, we take remembrance one step further. We show our appreciation for their service which has made this world a safer place," said Minister Thompson at the Candlelight Tribute on Monday at Landsdowne Park in Ottawa. "We must never forget the great debt we owe to those who have served our country-and those who serve today."

Minister Thompson will participate in various commemorative events including the Senate Ceremony in the Senate Chamber on November 6 and the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial on November 11. Many remembrance events are taking place across the country during Veterans' Week. Canadians can search for events in their communities on the interactive Calendar of Events at www.vac-acc.gc.ca.

Quick Stats: As of March 2009, Canada's Veteran population included:

- 591,900 modern-day Veterans with an average age of 54;

- 12,710 Korean War Veterans with an average age of 77. (More than 26,000 Canadians served between 1950 and 1953);

- 163,450 Second World War Veterans with an average age of 86. (More than 1,000,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served between 1939 and 1945);

- And only one known Veteran of the First World War, Mr. John "Jack" Babcock who celebrated his 109th birthday this year. (More than 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders served between 1914 and 1918).
