In the last seven years, with changes in FDA guidelines, expenditures on direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising have quintupled. Currently, more than $30 billion is spent annually marketing pharmaceuticals, a figure that is expected to grow as drug companies search for new advertising outlets.
